Default thinking about going with HUD - windsheilds?

im thinking about installing it mainly for track use because i dont want to take my eyes off the track. How much better do the HUD windsheilds show the display? is the HUD easier to read during daytime with these? how much lighter is the z06 windsheild than the stock one? thanks.

I am running a HUD with a non HUD windshield and can say that I have no trouble reading the digital read out either day or night. The image is clear and not blurry in my opinion.
That being said I must also confess that I have never been in a car that does have a HUD windshield installed so I have no comparison between the two options for you. All I can tell you is that mine is fine and if the previous owner hadn't mentioned that the HUD was not a factory option and that he had it installed I would have never second guessed it.

I also found that when I was auto crossing I was looking at the actual gauges and not the display. Even while driving I tend to look at the gauges more but perhaps that is just me. Hope this helps.

If you're getting a Z windshield for the weight loss, you might be wasting your money. I think with ALL of the Z windows being shaved it saved about 5 Lbs. I doubt the windshield's weight is THAT much lighter to justify the cost.

I have a HUD in my 02 Z. During the day I can see the HUD brighter than anything else. I wear polarized sunglasses, though, which dims the brightness of the HUD down so much I have to actually look for it to see it.

The HUD glass only prevents the HUD from "ghosting" through the layers in the glass. I've never seen a HUD with non-HUD glass, so I couldn't tell you if it actually does ghost. But I'd imagine that GM had the HUD-glass for a reason.

One thing to note and I don't know if it's on all HUD glass or if it's a defect is that there's a slight horizontal line in the glass itself which seems to be right where the top of the HUD cuts off.

I had a HUD glass originally and even though I specified a HUD replacement glass, they put in a non-HUD glass (actually it was marked HUD, but it was Mexico glass). I made it 2 blocks before I turned the car around and made them replace it again because I was seeing double - driving me nuts after having a clear image for the first 5 years. I guess if I had never seen the good stuff, I would have just though that was the way it was supposed to look and turned it off? Had two HUD windshields since then thanks to all the flying rock around here and no problems with those replacements.

Yeah, that seeing double is the "ghosting" effect I was talking about. There's a layer of film that prevents that. You can put that layer on the regular glass but it won't look OEM at all.

It really is hit or miss.

Many people have reported excellent results with HUD on non HUD glass, others have had problems.

Depends on who makes the galss. For a while I think they had the same part number and they tested each batch, the one's with good HUD results were labled HUD, the ones with less were labled regular.

I have never heard of anyone complaining that they put HUD galss in and had a visibility problem though (above post excepted, they used something flucky there), but its more expensive.

If it were me, if the insurance was replacing my windshield, Id make sure it was HUD glass, if I was doing it myself on a track car Id probably put the regular one.

There's no weight difference between the HUD glass and regular glass as far as I understand. The HUD glass is just treated with some sort of lamination that prevents ghosting. The 02+ Z06 glass is lighter and is HUD treated glass.

well apparently the thinner z06 windsheild and side windows together only drops weight by 5.7 lbs... im looking at some windsheilds on gmpartshouse, but it doesnt clearly describe which ones are hud compatible or the which ones are the z06 windsheild. maybe Gene Culley could chime in here? im surprised there are so many different options. i didnt think that there were any differences in the windsheilds through the years except for the z06 and HUD.

I would just intall the HUD first and see if it bothers you before you spend some big $$$ on a windshield

we have both; and I added the missing HUD on my 2002. There is a difference... but it's soooo minor that one can't see it unless they look closely.

The HUD glass is just treated with some sort of lamination that prevents ghosting.
yep; but it's a minor improvement IMO.

ALL 02+ Z06 windshields are HUD... All Z06's from 02+ came with a HUD standard.
