So, I got off of work yesterday. I walk out to the parking lot and head towards my pewter c5 coupe in the parking lot as I'm talking on my cell phone. I unlock the door, sit down then put on my seatbelt. Then I noticed a pair of sunglasses sitting by the e-brake. I think to myself that these aren't mine. I'm a little confused then I notice that the shifter is an automatic (I have a m6).
That's when it hit me that I had gotten into the wrong c5!!
Another person my building has a pewter c5 and I happened to get into his. The really funny thing is that it was locked and my key worked. I quickly got out and locked the door behind me.
I had heard about people accidently stealing cars this way. I just couldn't beleive it. I don't know if my key would have started it but next time I see the owner I'm gonna ask him to give it a shot. Nonetheless, it's still kinda crazy that someone else with a pewter c5 coupe, in my building, has a car with such a similar, if not the same key. Just thought I'd share.
Years ago while I was in the Austin Healey club, I discovered three other cars in the local club that had the same keys as mine. We were all friends and sometimes would leave work and find our car facing the opposite direction from the way we parked it in the AM, or find it several spaces away some days.
I really thought technology had advanced since those days.... maybe not!
technology has advanced a lot since then.. the vette keys are double sided and have the vats chip sooo unless got reeeeeeeally lucky and got the right resistor in the key(theres 1-15) as well as all the right cuts the car probably wouldnt have started..
the door only has like half the wafers as the ignition switch so maybe the first half of the cuts on ur key are very similar to his but the chances of all 10 of them being the same and the correct resistor and it working in the ignition are slim to none

WTF? What are the odds of that?? Let us know if the key ends up working the ignition.
Its good to see that you are one of the more honest and respecting people on this planet. Alot of people in your scenario would start browsing through the car for valuebles.

It's funny that you mention valuables. The sunglasses were Ray-Bans, easily $150. But I couldn't do something like that. Especially to another vette owner. Hell, I even made sure to lock the door when I got out.

I once worked at a Corvette-only dealership that had roughly 40+ used C5s in stock at any time.
When walking out if the main door with keys in hand I'd push the lock button twice to hear the horn in the distance. More times than not -2, sometimes 3 cars would beep. That means they are on the same frequency. One time 4 cars in one lot had the same frequency. Like hitting the lottery, but it's something to think about.

thats interesting too idk much about the remotes tho and how they work, but i think its a safe bet after hearing ur story that having the actual key unlock another car(in the OP's case) is much more rare.. plus we still dont know if it would operation the ignition.. still waiting to find out lol
Had the same thing happen to me one time. Was not a corvette but a rental can I had long term in Conn. I left my rental car at a hotel some of my co-workers were staying at. We left for a while and when we can back, my rental car was gone.
On the way to the police station, my rental car and driver passed us heading back to the hotel. The person that took it say he did not go anywhere.
Turned out all the keys for the Green rental cars fit all the Green cars. No wonder that manuf. if no longer in business.
