Funny thing is.. I got home opened up my Helms GM service Manual for the corvette and on page 6-85 under "VALVE STEM OIL SEAL AND VALVE SPRING REPLACEMENT" step 9 says:
Use the J 38606 in order to compress the valve spring...
The picture on the page showing the J38606 tool shows this:
seems like this is the tool GM recommends using.. can someone explain why it wont work?!?!

thanks man, yeah i should be all set by tomorrow afternoon, but thanks again that could have helped out haha.
Th Crane is by far the best spring compressor on the market for our engines. Simple to use and does two springs at a time! Works on all 16 springs perfectly! I believe RSI has a bunch of Crane "copies" for sale for around $100.

You will notice the tool in the top pic looks taller than the Kent Moore tool. It will not fit under the cowl on the rear most valves. I just did mine and had one of the KD brand like the top pic and it would not fit. I made one from some 1/4" plate and used a piece of 8mm threaded rod to tighten it down on the retainer with. Worked like a charm and took all of 30 minutes to build.
