Default OBD2 Tool question

I'm looking to get an OBD2 tool. Is there one type of tool that reads and diagnoses all codes or do I have to buy seperate codes for engine and ABS? I went to sears last night and the employees were no help. They had seperate "engine scanners" and "ABS scanners". Can someone with an experience concerning these tool help me out. Thanks.

Why not use your built in trouble code diagnostics on the car? Will give you every code any reader could, maybe more.

Ign on. Press and hold Options then push fuel button 4 times quickly. Sit back and watch as they display.

Wih the exception of a Tech II Programmer (mega $$$) the built in diagnostics on the DIC are as powerful as any OBD scanner that you can buy

If you're not sure how to access them here's a site with all the info:

Only way to go! On board - well unless you get an HP Tuner set-up and using for tuning too

you can get a little more out of something inexpensive like the actron cp9145 which is now around $100 shipped on amazon. the live data feature is nice since it allows you to see o2 voltage. st/lt fuel trims, air inlet temp and a few other nick nacks. the code reading is easy since it tells you exactly what they are, but, like others have mentioned. that's not a hard thing to do on your own. unless you spend big bucks the above scanner is about the most i would invest in.
