Default gas gauge issue

I was driving on the highway this morning and I was very convinced I had enough gas to get to my destination. out of no where, my check gages light comes on and so does the low fuel warning. after re-starting my heart, I headed off the highway to find gas!! About 4 miles down the road, the gage goes back to a little under half and the check gages went off as well. the car ended up taking about 2/3rds of a tank of gas.

wtf?? sendin unit issue? I only drive the car about 8 months a year and I seafoam it a couple times a year (gas tank) as well as use seafoam to store it. let me know what you think?

Yes, you guessed it!
Mine acts the same way... I combat it w/Techron in every 3rd or 4th tank. It is not the silver bullet though. Big $$ to have it replaced, so I always make sure I reset my trip meter with each fill.
Good luck!

having the same issue.....after every tank fill I reset the gauges, and then when it hits 3/4 full, it will go to a low fuel status and the gauge will read empty, I reset the code and all is well til next fill up.......I have not had it serviced for this, but I thought I read somewhere that GM has ordered a recall on this and they will replace or fix....My next step....it is annoying as heck....

You've nailed it IMO. The sending units in the C5 are known for being erratic at times - sulfur builds up on the sending unit causing an erroneous reading. Try some Techron in a couple of tanks of gas and see if the problem goes away.

Many threads and opinions on this subject. I started using Techron in my 2002 coupe (about every second or third tank fillup) after the second time I had the problem about three years ago. Been O.K. ever since. Others have varying degrees of success with Techron and Seafoam.

My EXACT problem until I started using Techron. Now it occurs every 5 fill-ups or so -- (about 6-10 weeks). Really not that big a problem so far because when it has occured the readings reappeared at about 1/4 tank. And, because the trip odometer and MPG readouts work, I know when to fill up anyway.

I had not heard about the recall which would be nice since I understand the proper fix is expensive or a somewhat cumbersome DIY.

Same issue here....I use Techron every other tank and only use Chevron gas. Can't say it fixed the problem, but I haven't had the gauge act up since I started this.....
Oh, and reset that Trip Odometer each time you fill it up...That way you have a great reference point in case you are doubting the gauge.

thanks everyone. Guess I'll have to track some techron down. we dont have any chevron stations here so that's out. seafoam is really expensive and appearently there is a bit of a shortage in Edmonton as I tried 3 places last week and no one had any.

I was hoping for better news but thanks for the confirmation guys

This may sound dumb, but I was on my way home a few minutes ago and about a have a mile from home at a light I got the same problem. Check Gages light and fuel gage dropped to empty.
Now the dumb question. What is Techron? I always thought ( my problem) Techron was in the premium Chevron gas. Is it just an additive? I have always run Shell V-Power in my 01 coupe.

Techtron and Sea Foam are fuel system cleaners. Techtron comes in two sizes, usually with a full tank of gas , you need the 14 oz size. Replacement of both sending units usually reuns $1000. or more.

I will give that a try, but if does not work, I have an extended warrenty, so it will be covered. They already took care of the Column Lock and the Active Handling went out.

I had it happen a couple of times in the 00 Nassau a few years ago. A friend said to use Shell premium gas. I have used ever since and have never had the problem again.

get it to the dealer!! let the warranty company pay for the new parts. or, you could let them fix my sending unit on your warranty

replacement sending unit at Rockauto.com is around $300; the acdelco one runs about $400. If you have the acumen, I suggest replacing it yourself. Not that hard.

does it require taking the rear cradle off (diff. trans and all the other goodies back there)? if not, I am mildly interested in attempting this.

I just looked up the sending unit on Gene's website and it is listed at ~$100. obviously I am looking at the wrong part. any chance you have a part #?

I am going to try the Tectron first. If that does not work I make an appointmant to take it in to the dealership and have them fix it

I picked up two bottles. I noyiced it says to run the car to almost empty then add the bottle and 12 gallons of gas. Is that what everyone is doing, or seeing I was a little below 3/4 when the gage stopped working could I simply add it now?

I have not had the problem on my car yet. I always use Exxon or Shell Premium gas. But about once a month I do run a big bottle of Techron through the car. Walmart sells Techron but they are the small bottles. I go to Autozone and buy the bigger bottles and use this in a tank of gas. It has been working good for me for over 2 years and about 40k miles. I hope it holds out for another couple hundred thousand.

You picked up the small bottles...meant to treat 12 gals. If you add it now (just below 3/4 tank) that will be OK. IMO to err to the stronger mixture is better than too diluted.
Auto Zone has the big bottles (treats 20 gals.) on special now. Buy one, get one free.

Thanks, I picked these up at Advanced Auto. They had the bigger bottles, but they were fuel injection cleaner, this is fuel system cleaner. As it turned out while checking out one of the guys working there has a C5 and we started talking, and he uses the same in his about once a month.
