I"m sure the roads are better than Sydney and so much more to see.

Don't bet on the roads being better. CA highways were once the standard for the world, now the're in horrible disrepair. I try to not drive in unfamiliar areas at night. Potholes come up so quick, that you often can't avoid them. Serious damage can be done.
