This is my first Corvette 97 A4, So I start the car with my foot on the brake and I put it in gear and the car feels like it just wants to take off. when it shifts from 1st to 2nd its not a smooth unnoticeable shift it's more of a slam into 2nd. when I step on it and it downshifts you better hold on. is all of this normal?
I cannot answer it with 100% certainty because I drive a 6 speed, but it sure does not sound correct. The hard shift could be a modified valve body, and the other could be a non-stock torque convertor. Was it advertised as stock?
If I'm right, starting on 01, there was a revised alternator mount which served to lower the rpm of the motor at idle to solve the "creep" from all the power wanting to propel the car forward.
I also think that there is a huge difference, perhaps going from a sedate SUV/Pickup/Import/anything other than a Corvette to a Corvette in that the instant throttle response, coupled with the massive power on tap, and the A4 transmission.
Depending on throttle/rpm/mph, my shifts can be a bit more abrupt, so much so that my wife notices. It all depends on how fast or what I do with the throttle.
If the car is new to you, I'd do what I did and have every fluid and every maintanable/replaceable item in the car replaced.
Start with transmission fluid and filter along with rear-diff fluid, see if it makes a difference. At least you'll know it is not due to used-fluid.
In D the shifting is very smooth, almost boring. I have to drop it to 2 to get anything like aggressive throttle performance. There is a noticeable jerk when you go from P to D though.
after I got my plates I took it out for a test, I was going around 40 mph and I stepped on it and it took a second but when it down shifted the tires started to spin, the a$$ of the car slid over about two feet, I let off and had to go back home and change my undies.
