Default a couple questions

ok as u can see by my screen name i drive a 1999 mustang cobra but i have always wanted to own a corvette. it has always been my dream to own one. Well long story short I’m starting to pay off my cobra and then plan to sell it and buy a corvette. Seeing I have a while before i pay the cobra off i just wanted to get some facts about the corvettes.

Anyways I had a bunch of questions for you guys but I cant think of them all right now, so as I remember them ill ask.

But for now, how much hp can the bottom end hold

What are the power differences (if any) from year to year starting from when c5’s where made till the end. Which I believe is 97-04 (correct me if im wrong)

As for what I want to do with the car here is a list of what I want to do with it after I get it and save up some extra cash.

-Full intake (I have heard vararam is very good)

-full exhaust

-cam (very fond of the whiplash 2 from englandgreen)

-heads (trickflow)

-nitrous system (75-100 shot depending on how much the bottom end can handle)

After that I want to make the car look amazing to go along with sounding amazing

HP was from 345 to 405. For most of the other questions, pick up a Corvette Fever or Vette magazine, or do a search on this forum, and you can read for hours, and you will learn a lot. Good Luck!!

The base model Corvette’s were originally rated at 345hp and were raised to 350hp in 2001. The Z06 was first available in 2001 and were rated at 385hp, but in 2002 it was up to 405hp.

I read a lot about the addition of power additives (i.e. cam, intake, headers and so on), but hardly ever hear about handling improvements. I guess it is the line from Top Gun, "I feel the need for speed". Granted the stock Corvette has decent handling and braking, but it can be greatly improved. Too much added hp can hamper the handling and braking, so I have always believed that set you hp goal and then build you suspension and braking to handle it. Once that is done go for the hp gains.

The Vette will feel so much more like a real sports car compared to the Stang. I used to have a GT, and I've driven the 99 Cobra. They're fun, but more like fast family sedans.

The stock block can hold 500-550 HP easy. BUT, you will have to beef up the drivetrain: differential brace (wheel hop can break things), hardened axle(s), auto trans / manual clutch improvements once you get over about 450 HP.

Nitrous is a cheap and easy way to get HP. Engines respond well to supercharging also, but MUCH more $$$$. Look at Forced Induction/Nitrous section for more info:

on higher mileage cars whats normally first to go (on corvettes) what are the normal problems that they have. and the only reason i ask is because for my first vette im not looking to get 30k miles or something like that i wont be able to afford one with that low of miles, i just want to be aware of what may be wrong with the car.

and as for the stock suspension and breaks what are the limits with hp before i will want/need to upgrade them (guessing) because i would like to make around 450ish hp before i want to worry about suspension and breaks.

i plan on being around for a bit just kinda asking the stupid questions here and there. and as for comparing the vette to a stang, i cant make that call just yet so ill have to take ur word for it, i have never had the chance to sit in one nor had the chance to drive one. but i love how my cobra feels, and i can just imagine that a corvette would just be a blast to drive.

thanks for the info thats what i wanted to hear, i have seen a couple of corvettes with cams and full exhaust around the 410-420 areas so i should be good with leaving the bottom end stock (once i get the car)

i have never had the chance to sit in one nor had the chance to drive one.
Then here are your orders for today. Drive to the nearest dealership selling a C5 (make sure it's a 6 speed) and take it for a spin. It will open your eyes

Read the sticky topics at the top of each C5/Z06 forum. There's a wealth of information there. You can learn much from the research on what to expect...

Yea agree, I owned a few stangs in my life they
are very nice but "well" nothing like the ride or
feel of a nice C-5.. Stangs are similar to the chevy camaro...rear seat family type, nice but just not
the same...as a sports car... save the wave
