My FOB stopped working. One day it worked, next day it didn't. I put in a new battery. Still no worky. Do I need to reprogram after a battery change?
When I shake it, it rattles. Sounds like a tiny piece of plastic inside it somewhere. I took it apart and found nothing. I shook the circuit board and that's where the rattle is.
It's probably dead. I don't know if the 97 has a passive switch, but on the 98/99 the rattle is the passive feature activation device on the board. The best price for a new one is at www.gmpartshouse.com

There's a little bell shaped device on the board. That's what you hear rattling. It is not an indication of a problem, but the not working is. Can you borrow a fob from someone for the 97 up to 2000 and program it to your car to test? I feel pretty sure you will need a fob. Around $78 from Gene Culley at the link I posted.
Very easy to fix a non-funtioning fob, I just fixed the two fobs that came with my 97' last week. Neither were working after purchasing the car.
-Using rubbing alcohol and a q-tip clean the surfaces and contacts (it may look clean but can be very dirty)
- Using fine tip solder iron, solder the chip with 4 contacts on the top right corner (even if the contacts look fine they probably aren't, as in my case)
It's worth a try if you have access to a soldering iron and solder and can do it without burning the strips or shorting pins together with running solder. I have heard of some accounts where soldering brought them back.
Man, that's tiny. I just might give it a try before I order a new one. The worst that can happen is I kill it better.
Seriously I was going to drop the money as well but figured I'd give it a try, the only thing you can loose is your time since the fobs already dead. I'm two fobs ahead right now!

Probably time for a new fob, especially if the battery change didn't make it work again. They do go out from time to time - I had to replace one on my '00.
You can also upgrade the entire system to the newer '01-'04 setup. After going through two or three new passive style fobs and a bunch of headache, I did the swap. It does require modifying your wiring harness (unless you can figure out how to jumper the plugs), and new tire sensors - if you are worried about them. Do a search, you should fins some info on the swap.
Hmm, I didnt think us 99(and older) guys could use the 2000 fob's. I tried the solder but didnt work for me. Its been two seasons without a fob and its getting to me

You can use a 2000 FOB on a 99, I use a 2000 FOB on my 98 and keep the "original" FOB as a spare.
