I use a product for washing motorcycles called S100. Following the directions you spray it on and hose it off, use light pressure. Cover any electrical items you want protected. The engine compartment looks brand new and has a nice sheen. I've done it a few times and have had no problems afterwards. I've gotten it at Harley dealers but I'm sure you can find it at other places. Works great.
