When you shut it off and take the key out, does the steering wheel lock or can you still turn it?

I'll have to check the next time I drive it.
I do hear a noise that sounds like a locking mechanism when I shut it off?

Or it has had the GM recall done on it. They put a plate to stop the locking mechanism from engaging.

Um, I think mine had a different wiring harness installed. That's what the service bulletin said.

You don't have to drive it. Just walk out to it, grab the steering wheel and see if it's locked, or if you can turn the wheels. No key needed.

That's the way I would check it.

What has to happen if does "lock"? Is it crazy expensive to fix?

OK,,to consolidate,,A4's prior to 01,,and all M6 cars are susceptible to problems. IF wheel turns with key out,,you have had a recall done. If wheel turns and you hear the solenoid TRYING to work,,you have had the recall AND do not have an after market CLB. A properly installed CLB bypasses the power to the solenoid thus it is quiet. About $50 for a CLB and about 30-45 min to install!! With a recall done,,they ALSO program a 2mph fuel cut off,,and WHEN the factory recall K harness fails(not if,,WHEN it fails) You will be stranded with a car that WILL start,,just wont go anywhere!!! ASK ME HOW I KNOW,,,Mine had TWO recall fixes before I bought it,,didn't know about hearing the solenoid,,didn't know if it had a CLB,,,,,,,WELL I found out!!!

So why isn't GM utilizing this method? If it is a better option? Not being a jerk, just wondering.

Edit: Just ordered one for $40 shipped.

Further they got off the hook with NHTSA who forced the safety recall by reprogramming the PCM to prevent the car being driven if the BCM thinks the column is locked. The 2mph reprogram is 100% effective in accomplishing that so NHTSA is out of this. The column locking by itself nor the fuel shutoff are safety issues. Prior to the 2mph solution it was possible to drive the car with the column locked under certain conditions. That was in fact a safety issue. The fact that there are many other components that can and will fail and leave the driver stranded is just a "maintenance" issue for the current owner to deal with.
Just a foot note to this,,while there were a few stories of it locking while in motion,,,the column locks up primarily after key insertion,,so they can get away with this solution!! Some have had tuners reprogram 2MPH to like 200 MPH to further insure no problems!!

None of this is a problem with the bypass correct?
