I'd prefer to keep it stock, so aftermarket isn't a real good option to me. I'm trying to get a handle on the expense involved. What would you estimate the labor cost to remove/replace the radio, and what do you think a used stock radio would cost?
I guess I could just get out the black and white sharpies and then be real carefull....
thanks again......
Just my opinion so dont shoot me....... that thing looks really dirty. look at the dash it looks like 2 differant colors where is worn and in the air vent it looks caked with dust. Dont get me started about the HVAC unit it looks chipped and dirty.
Now with that said i am a clean freak in my car so dont take it personal.
My guess is the guy that owns it is some kind of mechanic or something and has his dirty hands on everything...
Just bringing this to top to close out. I ended up buying a used bose radio from a GM pickup. Same head unit, but as it turned out, the back plug configuration was different. harvested the head from the donor radio and installed it on the original radio.
To answer a few other questions brought up in this thread...the original owner was not a mechanic....he was school teacher. There are no chips or cracks on anything else. The 'dirt' on the HVAC panel was actually some spilled coffee. I've since cleaned the interior and it looks great!!!
Thanks for all the help and advice.
Oh...btw, I now have a spare radio with VERY worn buttons but excellent ***** that works....Shipping in one of those USPS 'if it fitsit ships' is probably $10. For $20 I'll ship it to anyone who wants it.
Still, I have to wonder how in the heck someone could wear the radio preset buttons down to the base plastic? Did this person drive with their fingers constantly on the buttons scanning from station to station?? Even the seek button shows extreme wear. LOL!
I had to laugh when I saw this picture as this is exactly what my wife has done to the last two family hauler stereos. The wear and tear is caused exactly as you described.
When we take family trips she absolutely drives me crazy. If a good song comes on, she needs to scan the rest of the dial to make sure there is nothing better on. After the song ends, she immediately starts searching for something else. At first it was funny, now I really think there is an ADD thing going on.
I just bought her an Ipod so let's see how long that lasts before it breaks...

I'll give you ten bucks for just the 4 fader/balance buttons.
