Default This actually happened!!

Alrighty guys!! Think this one is gonna take the cake for the weekend! I took the Z out today for a little "competition driving" and on my way back while going DOWNHILL on I-40, the check gauges light came on. Really dont know why, but bc it was downhill, I put her in neutral (its a long hill, good mile or 2) No biggie, so I checked my gauges, oil p-good, engine temp-good, gas-good, speedo 70-good AND RPM's 0!!! What tha F!!! Strange, so I gave her a little gas.....NOTHIN! The car was off! So after another G-pedal attempt (that failed) I put her in 6th and she jumped to life. Anyone know what the heck happened??
Thanks,
Nate

How could you have good Oil Pressure if the car wasn't running?

Maybe when you gave it the gas after it was in neutral, it wasn't in gear. If you were freaking out, it's possible you weren't thinking clearly and wasn't totally aware of being out of gear? It seems this winter, the check engine light has been coming on in a lot of my vehicles...too much ethanol in the gas?

Good call on the oil pressure. The sending unit is bad so it always reads 80. So I guess it wasnt good, as much as it was (normal). And as far as the car being out of gear, I knew that, I put it there. And I always know the current condition of my vehicle. The reason I gave her gas was to see if that would make a difference in the RPM's. And cruising down the interstate at 70 MPH, road noise is a little loud, so even if the tach didn't read correctly, I would still hear the engine rev. So back to the OP...any thoughts?
Thanks,
Nate

I had a "loss of Tach signal" once or that is what I thought I remembered it saying. Have not had to diagnose because I reset it and it never came back. This happened over a year ago. Check your codes?

Good suggestion. But, when your Tach malfunctioned, did it shut off the engine. Because mine just shut off at 70mph.

Strangely this happened to me once... Cruising down a hill and in neutral, and the engine shut off - RPM--->0. I was like 'OK.' Put it in 5th, and it jumped back to life. This maybe happened in September and that was the first and last time. So far, I've thought of it as a huccup until I see it happening again.

Glad to see Im not the only one!!! People probably thought I was a moron. Has it happened again? Did you do any mods right before it happened? I changed out my ram air intake to a blackwing right beforehand, but no engine codes came up.

Nate, sounds like your engine stalled out on decell... any codes in the DIC? If you just recently changed your intake I'd bet thats the cause. the STFT and eventually LTFT's need to re-learn their values with the changes in air volume... if the ECU can't adventually adapt itself you might want to look into getting tuned.

the reason you had oil pressure with the engine off is because we have mechanical oil pumps, not electrical. if the engine is stalled, as long as you're in gear, you can be coasting down a hill and have oil pressure.

as far as the car turning back on all of a sudden... when you put the car in 6th gear, and took your foot off the clutch, you basically 'pop-started' the motor back on. if you've ever owned a car with a bad starter/solenoid you learned how to do this by pushing the car to get the wheels spinning, then throwing it in gear and poping the clutch to start the motor.

I figured the mods might have had something to do with it.

Dont know if you saw what I posted above, but the oil sending unit is bad, so she always reads 80.

Hahahaha, I remember doing that to our old 4-wheelers. Never thought Id take what I learned from a $500 dirt toy and apply it to a sophisticated racing machine. Thanks for your input boost.

I had mine stall at the track 3 times in a row. It is a down hill grade there with hard decel followed by a sharp left turn.

No codes. I have not found any obvious electrical cause yet.

That helps. Mine wasnt a hard decel, but still. Im thinking right now the the Air-Fuel ratio is a little off.

I was not coasting with clutch in, but if I remember correctly, I felt like it stopped momentarily then basically jumped itself off since I was still moving and in gear. I have to agree with the others though and think the mod could have affected yours. There is a retraining for air flow when adding intakes I think.
