I just got a service column lock message on my display. Car has 18000 miles ... 2002 C-5 Can this be serviced at home or is it a big deal Dealer needs to do... Help....
I've also had this problem on my 97. If you really **** the wheel back and forth before you start it sometimes this frees it up. You can also remove it if you don't care about having your steering wheel lock.
With Mike98SilVert advice. As you'll see there are tons of post on this issue. The Dealer fix is not a fix. The only proven, long term and reliable fix has been to get a Column Lock Bypass.
These threads seem to pop up pretty much every day. This is a well known and documented problem that every C5 owner WILL have at some point... None of GM's recalls sufficiently addressed the issue, so many forum vendors (I got mine from corvettes of houston) sell CLB's or Column Lock Bypasses to keep this from happening. THE CLB IS THE ONLY THING THAT WILL FIX THIS PROBLEM.
Here is a link to the sticky on this topic located at the top of the tech section:
Read that and you will know everything you need to know about the recalls, bypass, etc.
If yours is stuck and you need to move it now, you could try jerking the wheel from side to side with considerable force while the ignition is off, that may jar the mechanism loose, but it will happen again very soon. That should only be a temporary fix until your CLB comes in...

If you are not already back on the road -- please give us a call. We have a CLB ready to ship.

By all means,,,,STAY AWAY FROM THE DEALERSHIP!!! If it has not had the factory recall fixes,,,you absolutely do not want it!! It creates more problem than it fixes,,AND the factory fixes ALWAYS fail,,leaving you worse off than before!!!
