The T-56 is a bullet-proof unit manufactured by Borg Warner for many applications such as the Viper, Corvette, Aston Martin and even the Mustang Cobra. Some data indicates that since 1998 it was built by Tremec.
Tremec made all the manual transmissions in the C5's. MN6 and MN12 (T56).
Corvette 6-speed manual transmission.In the 1990s, Corvette manual transmissions were equipped with the Computer Aided Gear Selection to meet fuel economy requirements. It required the driver to shift directly from first gear to fourth under low speed conditions. In 1997, the rear-mounted Tremec T56 6-speed manual transmission replaced the traditional mounted Borg-Warner T56 to provide a 51/49 weight distribution of the car and to handle engines capable of 600 horsepower.
Today
The TR6060 6-speed manual transmission.In the early 2000s, the Tremec T56, weighing 121 pounds, were placed in Cadillacs and Corvettes powered by the 6- and 7-liter V-8s. In 2008, the TR6060 6-speed manual gearbox replaced the T56 and helped improved the 0-60 mph run times to 4 seconds.
Well now I'm not so sure about the years. I was told by the dealer and asked other questions at the factory later, but supposedly BW manufactured the tranny for '97 and '98 and Tremec past that. My '99, I somehow got a BW tranny which cause me numerous headaches and expensive repairs. Supposedly the '99's and forward were supposed to get Tremecs.
