I remote mounted my Escort 8500 in a watertight box behind the front bumper. Then ran a cable to a control box in what use to be the cigarette ash tray. Much more complicated than just hanging the detector off a bracket, but wanted it to be "stealth" (especially when parked at a show with the top down).
Been like that for over a year with no issues, and it seems to pick up the radar signals just as far as before. I expected some minor loss of distance due to the lower mounting hgt., but if it happened, I did not notice it (I took some before and after measurements with some of the known radar signals in the area).

This is what I did with my 9500ix. Used the invisicord from the rear view mirror. My 97 doesn't have switched power at the mirror but the 9500ix shuts itself after 4 hours if I forget to turn it off and it doesn't draw much so I don't worry about it.
I bought an extra windshield suction cup mount for my Passport 8500 X50, scuffed up the suction cups with scotch bright and used Gorilla Super Glue onto the top of the windshield as high as I could just to the left of the rear view mirror.
I bought a black phoneline and the smallest wire taps from Radio Shack, pulled back the wire loom, tapped right to the Brown and Black wires, pulled the wire loom back over the taps, used small cable zip ties and plugged the phoneline into the X50. It's up high and forward.
Tested and everything works perfect. Walked around the vette and you cannot see the detector even with the top off.
3-weeks now and it's still in place. If I ever wanted it out, I'll just take a razor blade and scrape it off.

Is the top of your windshield tinted ?
If so then the tint may decrease the signal your X50 can detect....I seem to recall that in the Escort/Passport mounting instructions.
I have used many mounts over the years. (see post 6 above) When I moved from an Escort 8500 x50 to the 9500i I felt the mount I used for the 8500 just didn't place the 9500i where I needed it. So I tried several ideas and ended up using a modified GPS mount. Not as pretty as some but it places the 9500i close to me so I can set the various options and out of the way. And the mount was under $10. Ran a switched wire up under the pillar.

jrprich, Yes I have the factory tint band as well but as I understand the factory tint is non-metallic and should not cause any interference with the X50 or any other radar detector. Some aftermarket windshield tint bands are metallic and can be a problem.
I've had similar radar detector setups in other vehicles with the factory tint band and has never caused any problems for me.
I didn't like any of the setups for regular radar detectors and for that reason I ended up getting a k40 calibre. This allowed the sensors in the front and rear bumpers, the brain / speaker fit under the radio behind the bezel and the leds are both in the mirror with the wires running through factoy harness. This setup is working perfectly, undetectable and was well worth the money. I spent around $600 total, I got it for an awesome deal and did the install myself.

I also have the K40 (in the wife's Hemi Magnum), and can attest to it's great performance.
I agree, I have the cord that plugs into the back of the rear view mirror and it is very clean and unobtrusive without blocking vision. I recommend it highly
Hi
Did you have to pull it out of the rearview mirrow like it was a plug? And was it rough getting it back in?
I purchased the little cable that plugs into your detector and the back of your rear veiw mirror, which means in my coupe anyway that the detector (v-1) is right next to the mirror, works great and is not noticible to people walking by your car and is not in your way at all......I believe it;s forum vendor "corvette mods".
really very easy to install also/good instructions.
