MSG - you are point on!! LED's are good to go but as you stated you need keep a reflective lense.

Also, RS 32:53 "Proper equipment required on vehicles".
And RS 32:304 "Tail lamps".
And RS 32:309 and RS 32:311 would also apply.
Look at any state statute and I can guarantee it'll be worded almost verbatim...
So, in a court of law, if you are rear ended and you have these devices on your car, you open yourself up for a challenge....
I just don't understand why people "customize" their car to a point to where safety is compromised?????
