or maybe even a 3.73?

sell the 3.15, then buy a good 3.42 diff on here, and have that same guy install it for $250. The people here are giving you some good advice. The 3.42 is a MUCH better option.

Default 3:15s v 3:42's

My a4 was equipped with 2:73. Had Chuck COW install 3:42'S and a2400 PRO TORQUE stall and never looked back. Chuck did an awesome job and actually picked up a mile or two per gallon. Performance is awesome. Go with the 42's and a COW tune and you'll be VEEEERRRYY Happy!!!!!!

I'll be at Vararam in February...... Then you'll get the best 3.42 tune money can buy!

Hold off on the hand held tuner. It' won't do much.

We've documented a few cars that drove a few thousand miles with the 3.42 rear and NO TUNE.

It will be fine as long as you don't go WOT....

Also, for those wanting to know.....

An A6 C6 with stock tires and a 3.42 rear will only be at 1,975 RPMs @ 70mph with the converter locked in 6th gear.

Well, sometimes after an upgrade to 3.42's, you will get trans slip codes and put the tranny in limp mode without a tune. Mine was doing that after driving on a couple hour road trip. so he MAY be able to go without a tune, and he may not, just depends on his vehicle.

also, the A6 c6 is quite a bit different animal than an a4 c5, but it's still not bad at 70-80mph on the c5.

What I mean is both-exhaust and the higher rpm's.
I do quite a few hwy miles and don't want to feel like in those high revving rice burners
If you look at the chart there is almost 500 rpm difference at any speed between 2.73 and 3.42.I usually cruise between 80-95 and don't wanna be in situation that it will start to be annoying, and I don't do track either ....just want to get off the light quicker......

Try a 3:42 and then a TTi Kit. Then you are talking some serious neck snaping power

Sounds like the OP is sticking with the 3.15 setup. I went up to the 3.42 myself but going from 2.73 to 3.15 is an improvement (I guess).

ok, I hear ya...I am in the same boat...don't race, just want more low end torque. But I am thinking 3.42 is the best way to go, even with the higher rpms. Right now, in 3rd, with my 2.73 at 80mph the power and the exhaust note are just awesome. they say with a 3.42 I will have this same power at 30 mph, where right now the car is sluggish in response. So, you may not gain much in this weak area of the power band. Also, I have Corsa pacecars, so I have no drone at all and the note at 80mph in 3rd is like music to my ears, not annoying at all. It could be whatever exhaust you have is part of the problem. With the 3.42 I should be able to avoid cruising in 3rd on the highway, and still get the cool exhaust note. If you were close by we could compare cars...

You will notice a difference just going to the 3.15s. But .....
