my 2002zo6 i having ahard time going into reverse it seems like it i not so muchgrinding but not going in until i play with it then she goes in please some tech advice thanks dave
Mine is also difficult to get into (and to stay in) reverse. I don't know if this is widespread or not, nor do I know how to fix it. I tried a C6 Z06 shifter thinking that it might help with the reverse selection problem, but it didn't help.
^ LOL pwned.. **** the grammar police, it's the internet!
What shifter are you using? Does it have a hard time going in cold, or all the time?
How many miles are on the drivetrain? Do you change fluids somewhat regularly?

When I have trouble getting reverse I just put the shifter in 3rd first, then without releasing clutch slip over to rev. & it goes right in. I don`t think its a trans. prob just the nature of the beast.

So lets take a trip back into 2002. Youre in the Chevrolet dealer and ready to buy a nice new 2002 Vette. You hop in the car with your salesman and you go to back out, but, it wont go into reverse... the salesman says "Oh just put into 3rd then into Reverse". Would you think thats how it was supposed to operate? Would you think twice before laying dow around $45-50k?
Its not the "nature of the beast" Its your transmission wearing. Particularly the blocker rings in the synchronizer assemblies. You have to put it into 3rd first to slow the reverse idler gear down so that the reverse gear can mesh withthe reverse idler and mainshaft gear.

Hmmm... Thats Strange , its been like this since the car was new. Couldn`t have too worn then. Never had a trans prob. 30,000 + miles.
You folks never put specifics to your questions. How many miles on the clutch or all the sudden? or what year, what maintenance done and when. What mods were done , like a shifter swap, ect....... Change the clutch fluid till its clear. Change the tranny fluid are going to be the most likely answers. Before we can help you ,you have to help us
To answer the specific questions above: My 2004 Z06 has 28,000 miles and has been hard to get into reverse since it was new. The dealer said "they all do that". YES, I can select first and then reverse, and it will usually go in, but why do some go right in, and some have to be finessed?
thanks for all the replies now for my next question does $1600.00 dollars sound like or about the right price to replace the cluth on this beast my corvette mechanic told me to bring a wheel barrel full of money LOL (he said at least 10 hrs of labor that the whole rear and transmission has to come out, figure $500.00 for the parts and $1100.oo for the labor Dave
I would suggest the reverse lockout seleniod is not operating properly. If it is not releasing then you would have to use brute force to get that thing in gear. Had this problem with my WS6. If you are not having any other issues with the tranny then I would check this lockout selenoid. It's on the Passenger side (i think) and has a plug with two wires. I would first unplug it and see if the problem is the same. then I would test the wires for continuity, lastly remove (or leave it in, just listen for the click) the selenoid and check the function of it. Leave it unplugged and use a 12 volt source to actuate the selenoid. I would check this first, before dropping a chunk of change on a tranny or clutch.
My 04 does it and I have the C6Z06 shifter. Checked the reverse lockout solonoid and it was fine. Shift forks are fine. Did Ranger method on clutch fluid and that's all good. Guess some do it and some don't.
My 02 has the same problem. I bought the car with 16,000 miles and it has been like this off and on. I have not tried slipping it into 3rd and then into reverse but will try it. Mostly I just push the clutch in and out a few times and it goes in. I change my clutch fluid monthly also.
