a quick question: is there anything underneath the carpet in the trunk of the C5 coupes? For some reason I remember reading somewhere that the design of the C5 incorporates a spare tire well, which remained even after plans for a spare tire were canceled. If no tire well, is there any other space underneath, besides the little cubbies all the way in the rear?

Remember the torque tube tunnel consumes a huge amount of space, so much for the C5/C6 to have a trunk they split the fuel tank into two halves. Sort of like saddle bags. They sit behind each seat.

The gas tanks took the place of one of the spare tire placements. At one point it was stored vertically behind the seats. That would have sucked big time.
Another spot considered was under the trunk floor but it raised the floor too high and cost too much trunk space. Run flats solved the spare tire issue.
The rear center well was developed for a high-pressure donut spare that never materialized for the C5 since the runflats were developed in time for the initial release. Here's a shot of my rear section with carpet and batting removed.

yup, right out of "all corvettes are red". it was a subject (and design) that was labored over according to the book. run flats did solve their problems as they were space and weight savers that paid off overall.
On the other side of that coin, it's funny how a majority of C5 Corvette owners drop the run flats and go with standard tires.
Also, with more widespread use of run flats as the OEM tire of nearly 13 years of C5/C6 Corvettes, the price has not come down on the cost of the run flat. Even with their more accepted use on other vehicles.
and yet most of us switch to non run-flats at the first opportunity, what a difference. I run Goodyear Eagle F1 GS D3's and my spare is a cell phone and CAA card. (Canada's AAA)
