Default EBCM Recall? Why not?

OK, So obviously from reading on the forums there is a major known problem with the EBCM modules from Chevy... Question is, why hasn't there been a recall of this? Because it hasn't killed anyone quite yet?

It seems like a pretty major safety issue, a faulty part that causes the loss of the ABS and traction control?

Has anyone had this replaced at the dealer for free using this concern?

the car drives fine with out it...just have to know how to drive the car yourself. As for reliability....they stuck a computer between the engine block and the radiator, i'm surprised that it lasts as long as it does.

How is it a safety issue? Just works like millions of other cars do, no AH or TC.

Might want to make contact with the NHTSA and lodge a complaint. That's the way recalls get rolling.

You dont need ABS or traction control to drive a care safely.

I had the problem, and had the EBCM redone by Absfixer, so I am simpathetic to what you are saying, but I dont have figures on what percentage of C5's have had the EBCM problem, and I think its like a lot of "items" that come up on an internet forum, the posts you read are about the ones that go bad not the ones that dont.

Its just the way this sort of thing works. You read a hundred posts about a problem, you have the problem, so you may think its rampant. Maybe maybe not.

It is true though that it does not effect the drivability of the car if the abs and tc go out, and many cars dont have those features, but then again few of those that dont have those features (well probably none of them) have the acceleration that we do :-) so it could be a little more necessary in this car, but not essential (they sell motorcycles that you can readily kill yourself on in much shorter order than in a C5)

I totally agree with the statements that the C5 will perform fine (like most other beater cars) without the TC/ABS/AH, etc - that is not the point - I PAID EXTRA FOR THESE STANDARD FEATURES - they were listed as a selling feature on the window sticker! They cut corners on everything right down to the seat leather quality to minimize costs. The "rationalization" was that they put the money into "high performance" items (like this system in question). And now some are saying that the car only cost $50k+, don't worry about it. The car would perform just fine without a passenger seat too - not the point.

The EBCM is a SAFETY/PERFORMANCE feature I PAID FOR, so "Yes" I EXPECT it to function. I did not pay $50k so that I would have to explain to every passenger why the dash board is lit up like a pinball machine every time I put in the key and tell them about all the cool features that came on the C5 that no longer function - they don't just break - they constantly give you a visual reminder which might as well say "SUCKER".

Things are going to break over time and have to be replaced, but so many of these had problems early on, something should have been done IMO - especially when the fix was such a cheap one - they apparently just never bothered with producing an upgraded part. If these were just a $100-$200 replaceable part (as they should be), that would be different (it would be just like the oil pressure senders - a minor nuisance), but if they are going to charge the price of a new Apple Macintosh computer for a one-trick-pony, the damn thing should work.

As I have said before, with all the many new systems introduced with the C5, it is an amazing accomplishment that so few things like this really cropped up. Personally, I would have voted for keeping the C5 for a few more years and refining it before moving on - not like they weren't selling. The C5 had a very short run in Corvette years.

Choreo I agree with everything you're saying (well said ).

But when I tried to see how many, like what percentage of C5's did have the problem, from all that I read I never got a sense that it was problem in a significant percentage of the cars produced.

Hell, if its "your car" it always seems like a "significant" problem but he asked about a recall, think thats mostly done on flat out safety issues or on things that go bad on some mystical percentage of units produced.
Never figured it out.

Of course it doesnt speak well to how the problem was handled that whatever the hell absfixer does to fix it can be done for $150 and if you go to GM the only solution they have is $900.

People always want a recall when expensive things break on their cars, no matter if it even rarely happens.

I've had my fair share of EBCM/AH problems but I have to say the car will drive fine without it. Its convenience not safety

You can actually remove it and drive w/out it in place - it wont cause you to crash - therefore unfortunately NO RECALL we have to suck it up

Thanks,Matt

I have driven thousands and thousands of miles (including adverse weather conditions) without the ABS to guide me.

It is a nice enhancement to have, but not absolutely necessary by any means.

I think I'm gonna start another thread about all the things I think are effed up with my Vette... and then another about all the things I like.

Which do I like more, the things I hate or the things I like? How would I know what was cool if nothing sucked?

Wait... that made no sense.

It is a piggy back system and an option on most cars.It only functions in extreme conditions and does not effect the car in anyway in normal driving. There are no standards for ABS, so there would not be a safety issue at all.I would guess that GM and the Gov figures ppl know how to use brakes.
