Sounds like he had a bit of unfortunate luck. If oil and coolant leaked onto the ground, the engine is probably a paperweight. If a valve dropped, the piston could have come apart and caused the rod to fail. All we are doing is speculating until the heads come off.
There is no reason why a "first timer" couldn't put a cam in an LS1 engine. LS1howto has step-by-step instructions with pictures. Not to mention, a significant percentage of the people in C5 tech with cams put them in themselves. I'm sure most of them aren't mechanics either.
Another possibility is that the tune was off and he ran lean causing pre-detonation, which is very bad in these cars because the pistons are very brittle.
Three letters that you mentioned earlier... RPM (Real Performance Motorsports).... that is your answer... Did they tune it? have you opened it up yet? did a valve in fact drop?
I thought they went out of business because this seemed to be the "norm" with that shop..? You get what you pay for... Somebody F#$% up and did not know what they were doing. Very unfortunate! Sorry to hear it..

No it was not RPM that tuned the car it was a mail order tune until he could get it on a Dyno......... They should have it torn down soon so we will know the root cause

That was my first thought as well.

That's an okay plan, except you do not need to be WOT over 5000rpm to get to a dyno shop.
