I've been through three recalls, including removal of the locking plate. Now I am getting "the message." The car has started as usual and has been running fine for the past two days since the message appeared. Is this something else other than what a Column Lock Bypass would solve?

Get the CLB, read the threads on CF about it (if you haven't already) which will include a reference to the installations instructions if you want to do it yourself.
The good guys here on CF talked me through it when my DIC message showed up, I took their sound advice, and I've never looked back.

The reason you're getting quite strong advice is that this issue comes up every week here. It's amazing how we still have Forum members who play Russian Roulette with the column lock. I'd understand it if the CLB cost $1000 but its a $50 part that even the most untalented amateur could fit. Add to that the fact that GM has issued 4 recalls now, none of which have worked and most of which have made the problem worst. Only a paranoid would come up with a solution that cuts off the fuel (did I mention lawyers?)
The CLB fools the car into thinking the lock has operated. Simple. Fit it quick before your steering locks up and you have to tow it to a dealer. He'll then charge you Mega $$$ for a simple fix that wont work
...and your column lock problem will be gone forever.
Well, not always.
I have an '04 MN6. Put the CLB in. Everything was fine for a couple of years. Then out of the blue one day I start the car and it dies when I try to take off. Do it again. Same problem.
I wait a minute or two, start the car and drive off like it never happened.
Point is, for me its worked 99.9% of the time. Just that one day, that one time time it didn't. Wierd.
I BOUGHT MY COLUMN LOCK BYPASS FROM COH(CORVETTES OF HOUSTON )PAID 65 BUCKS INCLUDING SHIPPING.AND IT TOOK ME 45 MIN TO INSTALL IT.100% HAPPY WITH IT .THIS WAS ABOUT 1 YEAR AGO NEVER LOCKED UP OR DIED ON ME AGAIN!!!
