Default Cluster on a 99

Anyone ever change out a cluser on a 99? Since the key Fob's are passive and any models after 99 are not, what kind of issues would you expect when putting in a cluster that is a 2002? Will I need key fobs for the 2002 in order for them to work? Or is it, the key fobs have nothing to do with the cluser?

Also, I may have found a 99 cluster, but how can you tell for sure if it has HUD capability? There are four connectors, the two side connnectors, the one back connector, and the connector on top of the cluster (I think this is the clue, but I'm not sure). It doesn't have the bezel, so I can't look at the front and see if it has the Hud Adjustment switches.

And finally, for the novice (inexperienced) - would you consider doing the swap yourself and what are some of the tips and traps to keep your self out of trouble? For instance, should I disconnect the negative battery terminal? How long would you expect this job to take? Any thing else would be appreciated.

WOW. It's been a long time since I changed out my cluster on my 99.

I don't think the key fob has anything to do with the gauge cluster.

It should have a connector (the white one) right in the middle of the top, like the one shown below. This is a HUD cluster out of a 2000 but I believe all '99 were HUD compatible.

The front of the cluster should have the switch (HUD Adjustments) or you can buy it and install them.

Like below, the switchs will be in the tear drop shaped area to the left of the speedo.

As for changing out the cluster, it shouldn't be too hard of job. But it you are talking changing out the HUD, installing switchs, installing bezel in dash and the cluster, then it took me about 8 hrs total.and I was a novice at things like this. The whole dash pad has to be removed.

Oh, also, the mileage of your car is stored in the cluster. When you change out to a different cluster, it will show whatever mileage is on the cluster. You will need to verify the mileage and have GM reset the mileage on the new cluster.

Regarding the mileage, if you put one in with more mileage, do you anticipate any problems with that?

By law, the mileage must be accurate on the display, therefore changing out the IP Cluster, you need to arrange the proper programming of the mileage. Usually a speedometer repair place will do this for you, but know that you must supply them with whatever documentation is needed for proof. Getting the IP Cluster out takes about 15 minutes if you know how to do it. Its got two connectors on it that are removed to extract it. One large one, left rear and the small ribbon one on top for the HUD if equipped.
