a) don't line up well with the rest of the body lines
b) are not very functional
c) look kinda goofy.
The problem with top-mounted rear spoilers is that they produce downforce by significantly disrupting airflow over the rear of the car. This creates a significant amount of drag as well as a large turbulant wake behind the car that results in a low pressure area causing even more drag.
However, I think it's possible to make a wing that' subtle yet effective in it's purpose. The idea of a wing is that it allows the body lines to remain effective b minimizing the low pressure wake while still providing significant downforce at high speed. An ideal wing would be an on-the-fly adjustable based on speed, but that's a long way away for the C5.

I've seen them actually:

These are pretty universal, but will definitely go on a C5.
Pretty interesting...

Sounds good.
What if you extended the lines of the bumper's sides to form the vertical component of the wing itself:
Subtle, VERY strong and functional. With the proper inverted airfoil cross section. it would be very effective at high speeds without significant drag.

Normally I agree. Usually the wings

I posted these in the thread created several months ago when you wanted to do a diffuser for a C5. Id love to see a TS rear bumper with a diffuser built into it. These are obviously photochopped but the real thing would look bad @$$.

Doesnt Caravaggio make a couple wings? Correct me if im wrong. You talking about the one that wraps around the sides (so to speak)[/QUOTE]
Yes, the one that wraps around the sides. It was designed by John Cafaro when he was designing the C5. It was originally supposed to be a GM accessory. Even though it is an add-on I really like the way it looks. If it was an integral one-piece rear bumper, maybe with a longer, thinner CHMSL molded in, it would look perfect. I was wondering how smooth the rear would look with the lettering removed. A diffuser wouldn't look bad if was a little more subtle than some aftermarket ones I've seen.

No... Actually, they can be quite functional around 50-80MPH. Depends on their angle though. Taking corners and applying down force to the inside half of the car makes a huge difference in cornering; allowing more rubber to stay in contact with the road and allowing for faster speeds through the turns.

I would be very tempted to purchase something that has the molded in spoiler. But for me, anything else that differs from the stock rear (modified back-up lights, brakes lights, diffuser, etc) would seriously reduce my chance of buying such an item.
Just my 2 cents....

I just bought a SW a couple weeks ago. If you had one that was slightly more aggressive than the SW, but not as much as the TS I would have gone with it.
Good luck finding the majority on this topic.

Id love to see a caravaggio style spoiler made in with a diffuser at the bottom!!!!

I really like the idea of a diffuser, but NOT any of the current ones being made right now. It would have to seamlessly mold into the current rear bumper cover, without having the look of being stuck onto a stock bumper.
