Default yet another valve spring quesion

My understanding from this forum is that /02s and early /03s are the cars with valve spring failures. Do we know what "early" is? Would that be the first 4 months of production starting in July /02? I am going to be looking at an /03 in the spring and am hoping to get a definitive answer to this, but if the car looks good (don't know the build date yet), I will probably buy it and just change the damn springs for peace of mind. It's too bad GM won't step up and admit they had a run of bad springs, and let us know the serial numbers of the cars that are at risk.

Another nice thing about later '03s, is they switched to steel shift forks instead of aluminum, but I don't know exactly when either update took place. GL.

Looking for an answer to this also! My build date is March 03.
77,000 miles to date, no issues.

Easy fix. You should just save for some valve springs before doing any other mods. If you don't, you'll always have the thought in the back of your mind. it's also and EASY DIY..

DIY= do it yourself..

Give ECS in new jersey a call and find out how much something like that should run. Shouldn't be too much

Is the 3 percent failure verifiable? If so- seems negligeable enough to make the replacement of springs potentially a higher risk ( murphy's law).

PS- Read your related post- I see your basis.

You'd be surprised what you're capable of when you're short on cash and really want something done..

david please don't make statemets like that unless you can quote your source(s).

If your % is correct , that works out to 508 LS6 engines are at risk .

Does that include both intake and exhaust springs ? And did those 508 LS6es get all "bad" springs or just one or a couple springs? If you are not definitive folks here will misunderstand and then 'wild' exaggerations suddenly spread thru out the CF community. I just want statements of facts , if not nip it, nip it in the bud before the market valve drops out on the 2002-2003 Z06es .

You dont need to remove the engine. Its a very easy job to do right in the garage with only a couple special hand tools. People here can help you. I did mine for $325. with the special tools included in the price. I did a write up on the procedure, but its stored in my laptop. I can link it if you want.

LG Motorsports, Corvettes of Dallas, 21st Century Muscle cars, Huffines Chevrolet are my sources.. I'm personal friends with Keith Overturf (Service Tech) and Larry the shop Foreman at Huffines Chevrolet.. 21st Century I spoke to the Owner John Page.. Sean at Corvettes of Dallas and Anthony at LG.. Results were from never heard of a broken spring all the way to very very rare. 2-3% failure is a good ballpark figure
