Default 2002 - Replacing all fluids

Hello

From researching here I am going to replace the following fluids in my new to me 2002 coupe, MN6, 58,000mi.

Please let me know if I am missing anything or making a bad decision. I do have a couple of questions in red. I do not know the history of the car so doing them all:

1) Rear Differential - Amsoil 75w90 Severe Gear Lube - 1.7qts

2) Tranny Fluid - Amsoil ATD - 3.65 quarts. No additive

3) Clutch Fluid - GM Super Dot 4 Clutch/Brake fluid (I plan to do the flush method with Prestone DOT 4 and then once it is clear use the GM fluid...is that OK??) http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c5-g...al-issues.html

4) Brake Fluid - Amsoil DOT4 brake fluid or the GM Super DOT 4(How much should I buy?)

5) Coolant flush - Going to flush it all since I don't know history with 50/50 Dexcool and water. Don't like some of the posts about Dexcool but it isn't like there are other options right?

5) Fuel Filter/Pressure Regular - AC Delco filter for around $80

Power steering fluid and oil (Mob1) have already been done this week.

Am I missing anything?

I don't have access to a lift and don't have everything yet to get the vette jacked and level. A local place is going to do the fluid exchanges for these prices if I bring my own fluids. Any of them really out of line?

1) Diff - $40
2) Tranny - $40
3) Brake Fluid - $50
4) Coolant flush - $99 including Dexcool
5) Fuel filter - $40

Going to do the clutch fluid myself

Thanks for any advice
Kevin

Can't think of any other fluids to be replaced. Sounds like a good maintenance plan.

As long as the Amsoil has the limited slip additive already added you are good to go.

It is, however the Wix (VERY good filters) 33737 filter is only $33.89 at RockAuto.com. I highly recommend Wix products. They are excellent.

Instead of paying someone to do the job put the money toward tools to do it yourself. Once it is jacked up it is no big deal to doing the job. My .02 Enjoy your ride. Amsoil has an excellent hand pump for less than $20 and it is able to come apart easily to clean for the next type of fluid.

Re:

#3 That's fine.
#4 Depends on how long/much you flush. Usually one bottle is OK, but I would get two small bottles for sure though to be on the safe side.

Thanks for all the replies.

The shop had the Prestone DOT 3 fluid but not DOT 4. OK to do the clutch fluid flush procedure with that, then once it is clear fill with the GM fluid? Or stick to the Prestone DOT 4 for the flush as well.

Thanks for all the offers for help! Much appreciated

Sounds fine, But you really should stick with Fresh DexCool and distilled water. Distilled water costs like $1.50 a gallon at any Walgreens, RiteAid, CVS Ect. DexCool is chemically sound. The only problem with DexCool is if you have a leak or allow the reserve or the overflow tank to become empty, thus alowing air into the cooling system.

Kevin,
Not sure how you are getting your AMSOIL fluids, but if its not at dealer wholesale, about 25% below retail, please drop me a PM as I can get dealer pricing for you via the Preferred Customer Program.

As for your fluids, you have the right ones listed and I use all of those in my 02 Z06. FYI, I use the AMSOIL DOT 4 brake fluid in my clutch and brakes - makes it easier as I don't have to stock two fluids. Very high dry and wet boiling points and reasonably priced compared to some other racing brake fluids. Of note, your owner's manual does specify DOT 3 fluids. A full fill of the brake system can be done with about 2 bottles, and one should suffice for the clutch. But, I do my "flushes" the old fashioned way (with a 10mm wrench and a person to pump my pedal) and not sure if a TECH II machine flush takes more fluid.

Be sure you review the factory service manual procedures for the proper and correct method to service these systems. Not just for your own knowledge but so you can ensure someone who will be servicing the systems is competent with the systems. Do a search for Ranger's clutch fluid change.

I saw a YouTube video yesterday that showed how to change the oil in a C5, quite a technically inaccurate video. There is a special procedure to purge the coolant system once it has been refilled.

Just saying...

Great post !
I need to do the above too ! I know LG's changed my coolant when they installed the heads/cam 4 yrs ago. They added some special additive to get my Aluminum heads to seal correctly. I need to ask them what they recommend.

I plan to get the Rear Diff, and Tranny Amsoil and do it myself !

1. clutch fluid. I would instead drop the exhaust, the tunnel plate and purge the fluid from down below. This way, you will get rid of all of the old fluid. It makes a huge difference. I would buy 2L of fluid - so you can do the brakes as well as the clutch. changing the clutch fluid will be a regular occurance. http://97vette.com/howto/clutchbleed/index.html
I use a remote bleeder line.
http://www.chevyhiperformance.com/ho...021/index.html
the mighty-vacuum method
http://performanceworks1.com/ls1_clutch_bleeding.htm

2. consider buying speed bleeders for the brake calipers. very effective for purging an air bubble down hill. New spark plugs and wires too.

3. royal purple transmission fluid does work great - but AC delco syncromesh does work even better. dont forget the additive for the differential. http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c5-t...nge-picts.html

4. coolant system - http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c5-t...tml?forum_id=1

5. keep this thread handy http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c5-t...splay-fix.html

6. IN my opinion - another good "maintenance" item. http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c5-t...-cylinder.html

7. makes a pleasure to drive - http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c5-t...-question.html

Don't overlook Amsoil's handy-dandy little pump. It fits the screw-on threads of most of their fluid containers and comes with three, interchangeable, different length siphon tubes for use with different depth/size bottles and is not expensive at all. I'm glad I got mine. MUCH more convenient to pump the new fluid in. Just pick the correct length siphon tube for the container you have, push it into the pump head and screw that assembly onto the container. Push the long clear vinyl tube onto the outlet spout and pump away. Simple. Easy to clean and use for different types of fluid.

I use Amsoil fluids for both of my cars. I'll be doing the brake fluid soon as I'm replacing the rear brakes and will be installing stainless brake lines as well as speed bleeders on. Got the lines and bleeders from East Coast, a supporting vendor here on the forum.

The trans and differential fluids are very easy to do. Just make sure that the levels are proper and they don't torque the plugs back too tight.

for the brakes, I used less than a liter of ATE Super Blue DOT4. Probably around .8L
