You did a fantastic job. I'm going to be doing this in a month or two (Pioneer Z3), so I loved seeing the pictures!
Only one comment: I see you used crimp splices. I'd highly recommend not using those in a car environment. Soldered wires are the only trouble-free way to go!
I solder some things and crimp splice others. mostly I solder any time I assemble wiring harnesses outside the car or where crimp splices just won't fit. I really don't like soldering in the car. I've been using them for years and never had a problem.

You know, the right crimping tool makes ALL the difference. I bought a German-made ratcheting crimp tool from Gerots Garage (or whatever it's called) a few years ago, and that thing is SWEET. It makes ultra strong crimps and I no longer fear that the wire is going ANYWHERE.
Here's a last follow up. I finally have the whole thing together just the way I want it. I had some minor problems with the first bezel (me being extremely particular about my car!) and the vendor built me a new one to specifically address the problems I had which were pretty minor really. awesome service! here are some final pics
cutout markings for the switchpanel installation
the texture match is as good as I could expect, he did an awesome job!
My bezel was made by Ray, he's a former forum vendor, but since he's not now pm me if you want his info, I'm completely satisfied with his product and his service.
What's the little red elliptical shaped sticker or badge you have covering the Pioneer logo and what is its purpose?
The bezel looks terrific, BTW as does your custom switch panel. Really, really nice.
Its a Boston Acoustics badge, I have boston speakers and amps in this car. their equipment is awesome and the company is great. I replaced the Bose logos on the front doors with a set of the same badges. I thought it was a neat factory like touch to have just one company's logos rather than a bunch of different brands being represented. just my taste!

Just curoius why you have to use the vss wire for?
according to pioneer it makes the navigation calculations more accurate. it allows the nav unit to know more precisely how fast you're going, even if there isn't GPS signal. I think it makes the driver behavior stuff work better also.
I must admit though I'm pretty disappointed in the navigation on this thing. everything else is awesome and I'm very much enjoying the head unit, but the nav kinda sucks. since I've mostly been driving to and from work I haven't needed to use the navigation system much. I've used it 5 times total to go somewhere I wasn't familiar with, with a 0% success rate. none of the addresses are in there, it can't find anything. except for 1, it found one place...then took me to a location 3 blocks away from where it actually was. it can't find my house, its on a street that's been here for at least 2 years now, I think more but I'm not sure. maps are very out of date even though it was built just a few months ago according to the sticker. not happy about that part at all.

That's real interesting, because while I'm NOT pleased that there isn't more street name detail on the map (like knowing what cross street is coming up next would be very handy), I've had 100% accuracy and success in having it take me to where I need to go. Like you, I've only used it about five times so far, but it's been great. But hopefully, they will release an updated/better version of the mapping before too long. When I first got it, I did not have the VSS wire connected and the GPS was about a block out of sync, parallel to where I was driving, but I did the manual adjust and it's been tight and right ever since.
The Garmin-based nav system was the primary reason I opted for the Kenwood dd HU when I did the wife's a few months ago. It is almost identical to the portable unit so near and dear to her heart. She insisted it be a Garmin system if I was to go ahead with the project. I'm glad I did because it mimics her original nicely. The completeness and accuracy of Garmin systems is well-established. I'm surprised to hear the Pioneer system is not to your liking as I've heard decent reviews of it and was pondering it for my C5 due to the better graphics, etc.
Anyway, it sounds like you're pleased overall with the unit.
