Pry the center piece off with a small screw driver and you will see the top of the "Demon Key". It's called that for a reason, it can be very difficult to remove. Most have luck gripping it with a pair of vise grips and hitting the grips with a hammer until the key comes out. Then the **** pulls off. Gook luck

You've got it all right.... Except after you get the "Demon Key" out the **** SCREWS off, It does not pull off. But other wise, what he said..
The key can be a bugger sometimes. My favorite method is to use needle-nosed vicegrips, and then rap upward with a hammer. I will not take much force, but it may take several raps before the key comes up. Then, as mentioned, just twist off the ****.
This is also a great time to cut up to an inch of additional threads and cut off an equal amount of the shifter lever using a hacksaw. It only takes about 15 minutes and significantly improves the look and feel of the shifter at minimal cost.

There's always more than one way to skin a cat...
Poor man's way to lower your shift **** without need of hacksaw and the ensuing mess: You can drill out the center of the **** then enlarge the hole equal to the size of the threaded hole, then dremel out the stuff under the **** cap. Now you can screw the **** down much further than stock.
As stated, pop the plastic 6 speed cover, vise grip on the wedge, slip a long screw driver in the body of the vise grip, hit the screw drive up with a hammer until the wedge pops off, kinda like s slide hammer, then un-screw counter clock wise... PS : Watch your face when doing this, one slip and you will be driving yourself to the hospital with a broken shifter and a missing tooth. I put in a black 2" 8ball shifter and cut off 3/4' off the thread top of the shift lever to shorten the shifter, love the feel. Enjoy the ride.
