well i went and bought a new fuel filter and jacked the z up and to my surprise there is no filter where the manual says it should be did gm move it in the fuel tank like they did on the 04?
I have an 02 Z06 and reciently replaced my filter. Damn they're proud of that thing. Which is why I'd believe the statement that it's also the regulator. I found mine located on the inside wall of the frame left side of the car somewhere around the transmission area if I remember correctly.
So if I have an 03 Z... how can I tell where my filter is? If it's in the tank, should I even bother trying to replace it for preventive maintenance? Sounds like that would be a headache and a half.
On my car which has the external filter it is very obvious. Silver can about 2" in diameter and 4" long. If it's not there, it's in the tank. As to whether you should change it, probably. Especially with the higher ethanol concentrations in todays gas. But that's just my opinion.

Supposedly you do not need to replace the filter as part of any "required maintenance". And yes it will be quite the pain in the A to just get to it. GM manual says it's an 11hr job as their order of events includes removal of the drive line to be able to drop both tanks at the same time as it is not recommended to separate them while still in the car. So go ahead and call your local dealer and ask how much to do this.....make sure you are sitting down before they answer you.
And on a side note on this wonderful change that they made. Fuel pump issues seem to be common on the "up-graded" system.....Hey thanks GM
All of you do yourself a favor and try to keep from running the tank below 1/4. Rumor is that not letting the fuel pump run low/dry will help keep you from having these issues.
if you have an 03 you most likely have the FFS (think that is what it is called) system which has a non-replaceable filter in tank with the fuel pump. look in glove box and see if FFS is listed on options car has. It is an emissions (thanks govt watchdogs) deal. my 03 is a late 02 produced car and has internal fuel filter Dealer can run vin and tell you also.
What they said. If you have an 03-04 model, its in the tank. And if you really dont need to change it/fool with it, DONT! Its a pain in the ***.Unless you have to change the fuel pump too, dont worry about it.
thanks for the replys i went and looked at a buddys 02 and his is right where i was looking so mine is in the tank. my build date of car is march of 03.
VIN 14929 produced 11-25-02 and later is when changes were made to the fuel pump location per another post. Most likely that's also the change date for the filter location.
Gotta love the 01 C5Z... Had mine changed in about half an hour.. Mine does have its own FPR on it, not simply a matter of removing 2 gas lines. But @ least i did not have to remove the tank. fuel filter was around $120.00 w tax.
