Thinkin' about doing it again.

Feel free to flame me on this, I can take it.
Unless you have a drop-top or an FRC, there isn't enough real estate for a rack that would be worthwhile.

As far as the practicality though, I like the idea. I like the idea flaagan had about using a second deck lid for traveling on long trips where extra storage is needed. If you were to do that though, one thing I would definitely recommend is to drill "locator holes" (at least two per side) through the metal hinges and into the lid. That way come time to re-mount your original lid, you stick pins (1/8" drill bits or whatever fits the holes precisely) in the holes and then the deck lid is correctly aligned to it's original position.

Old man in a C-----how unique we must be to actually use our car to go out of the city. I'll get flamed along with you. I pull a small motorcycle trailer on long trips so we can put down the top on the road. If you can find one, go for it and don't worry about the narrow minded members here.

I've considered placing a temporary protective barrier between the deck lid and suitcase and lashing the latter down with flat straps wrapped around the whole lid. Just an unproven idea. We always loved the rack on our C3 but when not in use it is a liability (most of the time).

Every year my wife and I fly somewhere different out west and rent a car for a couple of weeks. We enjoy touring these United States and seldom stay more than a day or two in one place.
This year we're going to start here in Florida and see where three or four week's will take us. We've taken short trips up through the Carolinas before, and know just how much the trunk will hold... not much.
When we were younger we had a C3 vert with a trunk on a luggage rack. No one considered it "uncool". In fact just the opposite... it was an enviable adventure.

You might consider putting a hitch on your car and getting one of those "trays" you see made for pickups. Look in Cabelas or Bass Pro. I don't think it would be too heavy for a Vette and you can just remove it when you're done. Good luck!

I will agree to that. My C4 coupe took a pretty big load of stuff from home to Lake Powell for a family reunion trip.

Capehorn3, you picture of a C5 stuffed with stuff just made me laugh so long. I think it is a internal joke with me. My girlfriend attempted to do just what your picture shows. I gave her a black duffle bag (well two, one for her and one for me). they fit side by side in the hatch. What doesn't fit in them STAYS HOME PERIOD!. We are ridinig the vette to a mini vacation, you don't have to take the house.... Anyway enjoy, and no they don't have an external rack (to date) that I've seen. You may want to create one and see if there is a market for that on a C5..(I think it won't fly, you loose your drag effi. on mileage goes to the crapper.. Enjoy the ride.

Vettes were made to be driven. Whatever it takes to see this country we call America is ok with me!

You might want to think about leaving something at home, like your wife!

That actually isn't a bad idea.. Nothing permanent with that.

The reason they were on the C3's and the C4 Verts was because THERE IS NO FREAKING ROOM. If you had stuff in the back, the top wasn't going down. The trunk on the C5 holds lots of stuff and you can still put the top down. Honestly, the trunk was one of the reasons I got one.

The 4 week trip does sound awesome though. I hope to one day be able to do that. Good Luck

Whenever my wife and I take longer road trips with the Vette, we often ship extra clothing or other necessities to a prearranged destination, either to a friend's home or to General Delivery, (postal service, UPS, or FED EX, in the nearest town to where we plan to visit. We also do this on the return trip by simply shipping back home. It works for us. "Happy Motoring"!
