Actually, it was the cheapest corvette offered with the C5 body style. In 1999 it was the FRC, fixed roof coupe. Not many frills, just an entry level vette. In a nut shell, it didn't sell very well. In 2001, they gave it a bump in power, 385 at the crank, and re-named it after the 1960's roadrace corvette Z06. In 02 they made some more changes and blah blah.......
The FRC was / is the stiffest chassis by 12-13% over a coupe. The torsional frequency is 3.5 to 4 hz over both convertible and coupes as the FRC registers 22 hz. The Z06 registers a stout 24 hz. that is cutting edge.
As has been stated the origin , starting with the 1999 FRC was originally designed to be a no frills Corvette , low weight , basic starter package.
The 2001 Z06 offical weight is 3115 pounds , which is 38 pounds lighter than the previous FRCes (1999-2000) and 104 pounds lighter than the '01 coupe. Weighed in against the best performing C4 (1995 ZR-1) the Z06 is 420 pounds lighter.
I love the body style of the FRC ( I own both, 2000 FRC and 2001 Z06). I'd like to believe that the distinctive body was also a reason to choose the FRC as the Z06 platform.

the "billy bob" corvette was the orig FRC... not the Z06 (as it was the most expensive)
I was refering to the top past of that post. I do not believe Billy Bob was the "Original FRC" It was being going to made into a "poor mans corvette" with a 5.2L?? and other less attractive "additions" Hints the Billy Bob. The reason for this was GM's concern with corvette sales going into the late 90's, but since sales skyrocketed, they decided to turn it (the FRC) into a high performance model (the Z06). Thanks

You have a dandy in that '01 Z06! The '01 cam has more intake duration (3°?), and same exhaust duration, as the '02-'04. I think the LSA is tighter on the '01, as well. But the '01 has .025" less lift. A set of 1.8:1 ratio rockers in the '01, and it will out run the '02-'04. I know, because my buddy has one of the '01 models with the 1.8 rockers. At the strip, his car is almost always 1-2 car lengths ahead of the '02-'04 cars. My guess is this cam puts an '01 around 410-415hp, vs the 405 of later model......
