I believe GM states their top speed is reached in 5th,,as I recall for the targa coupes is 174. The hard tops a little less,,around 170. You can reach WELL into the 100's in 6th,,but as the speed goes up the stock motor starts loosing the aero drag war!! That's why the slightly lower ratio in 5th pulls farther into the RPM range and reaches a higher top speed
!!! I'd LOVE to find a place to top her out in a legal way!!! Guess I'll have to be content with my 107 to 110 on the strip!!

Yes, it is true. Top speed in the C5 can be reached in 5th gear.

I have done in my stock 02 Z06 174 in 5th gear. There just happen to be a 2002 Viper and a CL 55 AMG Mercedes Benz trying to do the same thing, key word "TRYING" 
. This was in Mexico of course on a abandoned air strip.
