Talked to the dealer where I purchased my new to me 99 cp and he changed the oil for me before I pick it up tommorrow and put in regular dino oil. My question, can I changed back to syn oil without any problems or should i just stick with the regular dino oil. I'm old school and we didn't believe in switching back and forth, but I know things has changed over the years and I'm open to any suggestions or comments.
Regular oil will not stand up to the temps like Synthetic Oils will such as Mobil 1. It is not going to harm things but in the long run you should stick to Mobil 1 or a good Synthetic oil.
It would be do it at the 3000 mile mark or if you are really worried sooner.
I am surprised that with the oil cap saying use "Mobil 1", But they still put in Regular oil, Must of not had any or just did not care what the cap said?
He should know better. If they can read the cap then they know it takes Mobil One, but obviously he's trying to save a buck. Have him change it before you pick it up.
If the oil the dealer put in doesn't conform to the GM 4718M spec, then you should have that dealer do it again, this time with the proper oil (and show them where they went wrong, particularly if it's a GM dealer).
I use Amsoil in my ride. It is by far the best full syn oil on the market. 25,000 miles or one year!! You can get the filter as well. Here is the link!! http://www.c66racing-synthetics.com/index.htm
I would make the dealer drain the regular oil and put in the synthetic oil that is called for in the Corvette.
I wouldn't even drive the car. In the owners manual it clearly states that the LS1 engine needs Mobil 1, or any synthetic motor oil that meets GM4718M for proper lubrication. Synthetic oil is really cheap insurance against a engine failure. And your gonna want to install a good oil filter too !

If it does not meet GM4718M then it is the WRONG oil for your car.
I am not aware of ANY dino oil that meets this spec.
there are many synthetic oils that do. Among the most popular
Shell Formula Synthetic
Quaker State HorsePower
Pennzoil Platinum
Valvoline Synthetic
Castrol Syntec
Castrol Edge
Mobil 1
Ok guys I have always wondered about this. The F bodies have LS1 engines and they dont require synthetic oils. Anyone know why? I have had 2 F bodies and ran mineral oil without a problem, just asking.
Its the dealers fault. They probably charged you for synthetic too. I would take it back and speak with the manager. As someone else already said, The cap says Mobil 1.

If the dealer sells GM cars, I would call GM customer service and report this immediately. I would insist that this dealer drain the dino oil immediately, change the filter, and refill with synthetic. I would also insist that they drain and refill it again, with a new filter, after about 100 miles to make sure all the dino oil is out. Regardless whether or not they are a GM dealer, if they refuse, I would not buy the car. If their service department is so lame as to be unable to read the oil filler cap, who knows what other bonehead work was done to the car.
Its because Corvette is GM's flag ship and Mobil1 is paying for the rights to say only use mobil1 in corvettes. Its all about the green backs. I use Amsoil after burning 2 1/2 quarts of mobil1 evry 5,000 milesI made the switch. Now I mabey burn 1/2 quart in 15,000 miles its a 2001 thing....my .02

except i would use castrol edge. i realize that some may think is a matter of personal preference, but i have read enough oil comparisons on the forum to conclude that the castrol product has replaced mobil 1 as the better product.
