Default Running too lean

I installed a Halltech for my 2001 ZO6. After install, I drove it for 40 miles so the system can reset itself. Yesterday I drove it in 80 degree Chicago weather for about 100 miles & then my engine light came on. Had it checked out & the tech showed me she is running too lean. All responses will be greatly appreciated.

Our intakes do not trip codes. You have an installation problem. We send our honeycomb laminar flow screen with every order. Did you install the honeycomb?

If you put that in your MAF sensor, you will have perfect long term fuel trim averages, which will only lead to more horsepower, not lean codes. Lean codes are generally caused by unmetered air after the MAF, like a air leak.

I did install the honeycomb screen. I thought I would get the code after the install, but it's been 5 weeks, & I drive it every weekend, weather permitting. This happened yesterday in 82 degree weather in heavy traffic. After the install, I didn't notice much of a change in performance

Check the hose clamp nearest to the MAF plastic end. You should be using the hose clamp from the stock airbox with the small rectangular cutout on the clamp. That goes around the plastic alignment tab.

If you use another type of hose clamp, you can inadvertently tighten it partially over the plastic MAF tab, and this will cause the airleak due to insufficient clamping force on the silicone hose it is intended to clamp.

The lean codes cannot trip when using the honeycomb, unless you have an actually air leak after the MAF sensor.

Where did you buy the intake? Direct, second hand, or from a dealer?

I bought it new, from a supporting vendor on the CF. I did use the stock clamp with the indentation for the tab.

Just pull the negative side of the battery for 2 minutes and reconnect it.

Drive. You should never see the codes again.

Jim, I will try that. So I won't need a tune?

Unlikely,

The Venom with the honeycomb should put long term fuel trims around +8 to +10%.

It take over 24.5% added fuel to trip lean codes, and that is highly unlikely, unless you have another source leaking.

Vettes in the 10 year old bracket have other sources of airleaks like the hose running from the back of the intake manifold to the MAP sensor, and the hose from the intake manifold to the power brakes. I saw some C5s with those hoses cracked and leaking, especially in hot weather since everything expands.

I gaurantee you that if you continue to get lean codes afterwards, then you have other sources of unmetered air that contribute to the high long term fuel trims.

You can purchase one of our SCT X3 tuners from our website that will allow monitoring of the LTFs to see where they are. MORE INFORMATION We can use the X3 to send Halltech exclusive emailTUNE® files for downloading to your ECM. We charge $200 for full tuning by emailTUNE® in addition to the cost of the X3. It saves your stock tune and two other tunes for different fuels, etc.

If codes continue, you can re-install the stock AIS for some testing with the SCT onboard. If the LTFs are over 10% (positive) then you have something leaking post MAF meter.

Adding the Halltech Venom and Honeycomb cannot cause codes unless there is already a source of unmetered air somewhere else to begin with. It may be minor, and not enough to pop a lean code by itself, until it is coupled with an aftermarket intake.

All of the above. My car ran a little lean yesterday as a matter of fact. i have the Vararam power duct and I found that the clamps had loosened up a bit. after tightening the clamps, I cleared the coes with my trusty programmer. Nobody likes to run lean, but youre issue sounds pretty common. Clear the codes and make sure everything is tight. Also as the owner of a 2001 Z , we definitely cant run a cold air system with a screenless MAF. With the honeycomb screen you should be all good.
