Default C6 shifter?

I have seen a few post on this and just trying to get a general idea.
I got my C6 shifter kit in today from Gene. Are those of you that have switched out to this installing the entire mechanism or just the top (shifter). I was thinking of installing the whole mechanism. Looks like just 3 torq screws and everything would be new then.

Then you need to re-align the assembly after you put it back together. My recommendation is that if you currently do not have any major issues with with shift engagement, leave the lower box bolted in place and just swap the upper shifter portion as you would for any aftermarket short shifter.

If you do decide to swap the entire shifter assembly, do a search on re-aligning the shifter assembly. Also, use some tape or wire to keep the shaft from falling down into the tunnel when you remove the shift assembly.

Default Piece of cake.......

Mark the positon of your OEM shift box and position the new shift box accordingly. This will provide a basis position that should mimimize adjustments. You don't even have to disassemble the shifter arm from the box.

Before removing the shifter rod from the transmission mark it as well. Most times it will be bottomed in the coupling. The shift boxes on all C5/C6es are the same ( the only difference with the Z06 shift box is with the two horizonal slotted mount bushing material)

Either go to the service manual or archive for step by step instructions.

I found a thread on the install but it did not say anything about the position. The new shifter has pin that locks it in neutral. So aslong as I mark how deep the shifter rod is in the coupling and my factory shifter is in neutral it should be in the proper position? Thanks for the info.

I am changing the entire mechanism because I get pinging from the oem one sometimes.

I just installed mine a couple of weeks ago. Take the screw on the shifter rod off first and put it back on last. When I removed my C5 shifter, you could tell where it sat by the outline it left. I installed the C6 shifter in exactly the same place and then put the shifter rod screw in as stated above. I have had no issues and it shifts fine.

I assumed that you had bought the complete C6 shifter assembly ( that includes the shift box) and not just the shifter arm assembly. So no you will not have to mark the box's location or deal with the transmission arm either because the arm is attached to the shift box shaft.

Does not get easier than R & R the shifter arm assy.

Same with my C6Z shifter install. Common sense prevails on this mod

Yes I have the entire shift box. So the install looks easy.

The pinging is more of rattle that comes from the current shift box. I have heard of others having this noise aswell on this forum. Sometimes it is there and others it doesn't make a noise.

That pinging or a buzzing sound is caused from a metal to metal contact where the two bolts are attached to the shift arm assembly.Put a piece of rubber under there if you are using the hard bushings and the buzzing sound shouild go away.

The shifter is installed. It was a very easy install compared to the Vararam that was my first mod.

Shifts great.
