All that power and only an on/off switch to control it.
Too funny (very true, but funny)
OP I wouldnt worry about what you read about A4 v. MN6. It all boils down to what you like to do, they both work great and have their own advantages.
From a standing start with an average driver its hard to beat the A4, yes the MN6 will pull on it at first (better rear) but you have to shift sometime I have an A4 and Ive never missed a shift yet
The MN6 is probably a lot more fun to drive overall but can be a chore in some traffic situations and if you want to go fast you do stand the risk of breaking something. Its a trade off, depends on your ability and how much you want to push it. If you're not squeezing every ounce of power out of it its gotta be more fun with the MN6.
Im not experienced in drag/track racing, so take this with a grain of salt, but if you wanted to mod it and were interested in getting down the track fastest from what Ive read you can mod an A4 to do that and it will do it all day long absent relying on your ability to hit the shifts right.
Fast is not the problem it'll be about the same either way. Boils down to what you want to spend and how you like to drive it.
im taking my A4 to the strip next week.....i have Borla LT's, X pipe, Borla catback, vararam, 160 T-stat, and a ECS mail tune........oh yeah and 2.73's
Having had both let's face it - nothing sounds more badass than a manually rowed V8 with a raspy exhaust doing a slow crawl through the neighborhood in first gear....... I believe dogs emulate this behavior by pissing on every bush they come upon.......
I'm always so happy I got the A4 for the main reason is that my car is a daily driver/commuting car and for all the stop and go traffic that I deal with every day, I'd have gone nuts with an M6.
For a weekend/fun car, I'd have gotten an M6 for sure.
If I need to, and get into the spirited driving, going from 2-3 or D works well enough.
With traffic the way it is on a ordinary day anywhere in or near a major metropolitan area, a A4 is just a logical choice. Unless for some reason you love using your left leg constantly? But if you hit heavy traffic, inching along at 10MPH or less for ten miles, an automatic is indispensable.

I have an A4 with a Chuck CoW tune and I have to tell you there is no lag between gears at all, I don't have any trouble going up aginst an M6 with the same mods as mine, With an A4 set up right it is nice and shifts very fast.
I remembered the last time i had a V8 with a stick how much bigger my left thigh was than my right a full inch! 83 mustang GT. I enjoy driving the car with the ease of the auto trans and i can take anyone on the road except for another Vette maybe?!.

If there aren't three pedals on the floor, I'm not interested. Automatic transmissions are for SUV's.

Here you go, the best of both worlds. An auto with a clutch, so you can still miss a gear once in a while just for fun. Mine got quicker by .5 sec when I converted to stalled auto.

Call me..... I GUARANTEE I'LL MAKE YOU GLAD YOU BOUGHT THE AUTO!
It totally depends on individual tastes and applications. As stated above, for high traffic situations an auto is much easier.
Mine was bought to be a weekend / errand car so the M6 was a must. Even though it's bone stock, rowing through the gears and feeling that low end pull never gets old. I also love the sound the exhaust makes when the engine is winding down from 3,000 rpms or that quasi backfire you get when idling along in first.
But I would never look down upon a A4 or speak ill of another Vette brother!
I am,,,and always have been a gear head,,so I have an M6!! That said,,with your mods, and a tune that you say you are going to get,,I'm sure it will be equal to or quicker than basically stock M6 cars,,except for maybe Z06's. Regardless,,,just have FUN with it!!!

Any advantage the M6/M12 has is easily negated by a higher stall converter and a shift kit in your A4. It is truely the best of both worlds and cheaper than your other option (owning 2 vettes ). I have such a setup and it will hold any gear for as long as I'd like it to. He said "nothing sounds more badass than a manually rowed V8 with a raspy exhaust doing a slow crawl through the neighborhood in first gear". I beg to differ! My shift kitted A4, with it's LG Pro longtubes backed by gurggling B&B Bullets humming along with the whine of my Vortec Blower, doing a slow crawl through the neighborhood in 1st gear sounds much more badassed! I believe Cave Men attempted to emulate this behavior by walking around bashing women over the head with clubs before dragging them back to their den. JMO though!
Since I was really only in the market for a Z06, I didn't have much choice.
I did however drive several autos when looking at cars. I really had no issues with the autos, but really couldn't see getting a sports car with an auto.
Every car I've used for a DD since the 80's has been a manual trans, so it really wasn't a concern for me.
the difference in sped will really only show if you are racing from a roll. the a4 has a few deadspots whereas the m6 has two more gear choices therefore eliminating the deadspots and the lag

I'd have to disagree with that. Higher stall does not give you the best of both worlds at all. You lose gas mileage and you lose some driveability.
For drag racing, you can't beat an A4 with a high stall and gears. That's why most drag cars are autos.
But when it comes to what the car was actually designed for, a high stall is going to make the car slower and it's going to heat up more and cause problems. Autos are great for the straight line when they have a high stall, but go through the canyons with one and life sucks.
If you want the best of both worlds, you do a 6L80 swap and call it a day. No high stall. No gears. Just the transmission. You get six speeds to play with. You'll get better economy. You'll even go faster.
But again, an A4 with a big stall is just ridiculous for daily driving and for any racing other than straight line.

I've now had two M6 and one A4 C5 and yes, the M6 has a little better fun factor and the rear gears make a difference. But I don't regret getting my A4 - I don't have to worry about missed shifts and with the 3.15 gears, the acceleration is very good. Plus with a few mods you can make the A4 into a really quick car.
