Ultra rare C5 spotted?
Possibly...
My wife went to visit a friend in a small town East of us today, and when she came home she was telling me about a C5 she saw at a gas station today that was a "weird" color...but she really liked it.
Of course, she doesn't really know (or really care) about such oddities, so she didn't really get any details. The only thing she could tell me was that it DEFINATELY was a C5 convertible (she has one, so I believe her) and it had a dealer plate on it.
She described it as a "goldish-tan" color with a tan top. "HMMMM...you don't mean "Aztec Gold" do you?" says I. "I guess you could call it that, but I'm not sure." says she.
I jumped on the interweb and pulled up a pic of a '98 Aztec Gold Corvette, and showed it to her. "Yup...that's it, only a convertible with a tan top" she said. It was in real nice shape, too..it even had those ugly early C5 wheels you hate on it..."
OMG...if it's real, she not only spotted one of 15 Aztec Gold C5s, but one of three convertibles. I have a hard time believing that anyone would be out driving around a rare car like that, especially on a rainy, crappy day like today

Not to shed doubt on your wife's observation - but I have seen Pewter cars with Lt. Oak tops and interiors that I would swear are gold color. Something about how the tan interacts with the Pewter......
wow i just read an article about it... and it could of been the "50ae" color... kinda glad they went with the red.. ALTHOUGH the gold imo isnt that bad looking but still would prefer the red!

I've done some investigating. There were three convertibles made. One stick, and it is owned privately (I believe). One was supposedly wrecked and totalled, and I believe Kerbeck ownes the other.
soooo.... I'm guessing it was a mistake, or one with a repaint...hard to speculate.

Bob McDorman had one of each in his collection in 2008. He didn't have the collection on display in 09 so no idea if he still had them.
There was one of those parked in the Forum parking area at Bloomington Gold in St Charles, IL. a couple years ago, I remember walking over to look at it, but don't remember if was a Coupe or Vert.

Well, there have been a few rare cars sold by these dealers in recent years, maybe someone snagged one at a Mecum auction? I know McDorman has sold off a bunch of his cars, but the one pictured has a black top, and the one she saw had tan (Oak).
She said that the dealer plate was an Indiana plate. Skillman, maybe?
I bet it was pewter color or something,, some of the lights at the gas station are weird and will make things look different colors. I know my Torch Red coupe does not look that red under those lights
I met a guy filling a Mercedes Gull Wing in Atlanta. He said he didn't drive it much, but loves it when he does. Why wouldn't the owner of the 98 Aztec Vette drive it once in a while.
BTW - there has been another factory GOLD C5 Corvette produced. It was an 03 during the Go For The Gold Campaign. BG employees won a lottery to drive the car for a month during the 03 production year. Late in the 03 year, it was refurbed on the assembly line and raffled off by the Museum.
I wish the 50th had been like this. I might not have sold 11K models, but it would have been a Golden Anniversary.

If it was an Aztec Gold car, then she did see a pretty rare C5. I've seen the one at Kerbecks and too bad they had so many problems with the paint matching on all the panels. I like the color a lot.
