I have 4 aftermarket rims...(rear 9.5x18) and fronts (9.5x17)...rear tire size is stock 275/40z/18...(front 245/45/17) when I bought the rims I put the same Eagle F1's on all four rims...rear's worked fine with the rubber fitting the rims even thought they were 1 inch narrower..problem I had with the front rubber is that the rims created about a 1/4 inch petrusion from the sidewall...which always bothered me...now it's time for new tires...my question is...to eliminate the "1/4 inch petrusion" on the front can I go to a 255/45/17 to make the front sidewall "flush"?..while keeping 275/45/18 on the rear?...my understanding is that the fronts and rears need to be a specific ratio (in respective width) to maximize tire life and performance...in other words..will this work?...thanx..Paully.
That should correct the problem. According to charts on the Tire Rack site the front tires you now have mounted on 9.5 inch wide rims should only have been mounted on rims with a range of widths of 7.5 to 9 inches. The 9.5 rims are too wide for the 245/45-17. 9.5 width is OK for the 255/45-17 tire.
The stock rims on the front are 9.5..and the rubber came off the stock rims...I'm guessing its got something to do with an offset at the lip..idk..looks stupid imo.

Here is the stock wheel sizing on the C5, both Coupe/Vert and Z06:
C5 (coupe/vert):
Front 17x8.5", 58mm offset
Rear 18x9.5" 65mm offset
C5 Z06:
Front 17x9.5", 54mm offset
Rear 18x10.5", 58mm offset
If your car is the vert pictured in your profile it came from GM with 17x8.5 front rims and 245/45-17 tires. If you have that tire on a 9.5 wide rim, the rim is NOT original and the tire is not intended for a 9.5 rim according to the manufacturer specs for 245/45-17 tires.
