Default going for it: C6 shifter

Went out and test drove a 2010 C6 GS coupe with a 6 speed. freaken amazing! I want one. haha. but decided that I really want that C6 shifter for my C5. **** and everything which was one part I couldn't decide about.

I want a shifter that's shorter throw, but easy to engage the gears. a more precise feel would be good. straight vs. angled shaft I guess doesn't matter. one thing I held off on for a while was the C6's angled shaft, thought I wanted a straight one, but actually trying it out I think I like it just fine.

so what do I need? anyone have part numbers? are all the 2010 C6 shifters the same at this point or does the Z/ZR1 have something special?

some C6 shifter conversions I've seen looks like the shifter's pattern diagram on the top was some wierd pokadot pattern. the 2010 C6 I tested had a silver/brushed nickel looking finish on it, a more or less solid color and not a pokadot texture. is that the 2010 **** style? how can I make sure that's the one I'm going to get?

what do I need as far as a boot is concerned? I understand the stock one will work but requires some modification. I think I'm going to go for a vette essentials leather boot for C5's with a C6 shifter. good choice?

need instructions! I'm an electrical person, mechanical not so much. I know my way around a tool but I need a good set of instructions for exactly what to do to swap this thing out, pics would be nice. what do I do with the pin thing at the front of the shifter? the plastic thing around the ball on the bottom needs to be swapped correct? greased? what kind of grease and how much? torque specs on the fasteners? etc. need that kind of detail. I can follow instructions pretty well, but I don't want to screw this up!

info appreciated!

I have the 09 C6Z shifter from RSD. It's fantastic!

that's the one that's threaded for use with the C5 **** right? can it be used with the C6 **** also?

this one I think also comes with the "box" not sure why, is it a good idea to replace that with the shifter? how difficult is that. this car has 103k on it now, so if the shifter wears, this one probably has.

You don't need to get the RSD Threaded one. The shifters are the same, just that the RSD has the modified shaft.

Yeah, the stock shifters definitely wear on the nylon bolt bushings. My car had 20,000 miles on the clock when I replaced the stock one with the RSD shifter. The nylon was in really bad shape on the original shifter.

The C6Z shifter is fantastic.

cool. does the new shifter come with new nylon bushings or is that something I'd have to get elsewhere to replace them? probably a good idea.

It does. It came with everything needed except locktite. I bought red locktite.

The install was easy and straight forward. Basically out with the old and in with the new. Bolt down and clean up.

only difference is the shortened and angled shifter rod, rest is same as c5, 80% mental.

Beg to differ. I've driven lots of stock and lots of aftermarket. The feeling of the C5 and C6Z shifter is completely different. And the bushing on the end of the shaft really does make a difference when it comes to notchiness.

I have the RSD Snap and like it also... I'm still getting used to it as I was using a Ripper for 4 years. Don't forget to aligne the shifter! I have to do mine again actually, I guesse it has "broken" in or something after going to the track, reverse is getting tricky to engage all of a sudden.

that's something I very much want! the notchiness of the stock shifter is really bad. it takes a degree of fun out of the car.

I didn't have to align my shifter. Maybe it was luck. I put it in and it was done.

Here's a video of me using the RSD shifter. You can see exactly the throw and how notchy it is. (It looks like I was shifting weird because I didn't want to cover up the shifter for the video.)

looks nice. I'm pretty excited to get this done. I didn't really expect it to have much of an affect on notchiness, just a better feel and shorter throw. but if it could do anything about that it would be awesome! this car is not very easy to shift, worst I've ever tried. it would be nice to get more of a smooth shifting feel. that C6 I tried that convinced me to move forward with this was such an improvement over the C5's shifter feel. I'm sure there's more to it than just the shifter itself, but every little bit helps!

Yeah, the TR6060 shifts a LOT better than the C5's T56. You'd have to replace the transmission to get that feel. But the shifter certainly makes a difference over stock.

Here's how I replaced my OEM shifter with a BPP. The BPP throw is shorter than the C6 shifter's throw but the BPP is somewhat stiff, even after doing the antivenom mod.

Of course, opinions about which shifter is best can vary. You might want to read these posts:

I'm starting to lean towards the MGW......

You don't need to buy the box, just get the shaft and **** from Gene Culley. You won't have to mess with aligning anything, must remove boot, center console, 4 screws, drop it in and reverse. Easiest to get the Essentials C5 to 6, but you can re work the original boot as well for free. Do a search on this forum "C6 shifter" in the C5 section, you'll see threads with pics. Same with the boot-search.

Change your tranny fluid and clutch fluid, along with the shifter and that also helps smooth out the shifts (even if you kept the stock one).

Did the C6 shaft/**** w/ fluids and my car shifts like a whole new animal.

btw, the Z06 shifters are not being sold by Gene anymore due to bushing problems. There's no difference in the C6 vs C6Z shaft/**** except the name. They are identical.

I had the BBP shifter in my blue Z06. I loved it although, it was so stiff many people (including the guys that hand washed my car) couldn't get the car into first or reverse.

My dad drove my car to Vegas so I could work on my laptop on the way. He kept starting the car in 3rd gear because he couldn't get it into first. LOL Needless to say, he LOVES the way the RSD shifter shifts. He says my Yellow Z drives completely different.

Installing it correctly is pretty much an allignement...

If you feel it's still a bit too stiff for you, you can add a washer behind the detent in the Tranny, aka Anit-Venom Mod and some quality synthetic tranny fluid and you'll be very happy!
