Default AC problem

Hi there, I am new to the forum as a poster but have been lurking forever. There is a lot of good information here. Just a little about me, this is my second corvette. The first was a 1992 quasar blue six-speed bone stock (60K odo), unfortunately never got to do what I wanted to it. I got a good deal on it becuase the previous owner thought it had a bad ignition, transmission and bose stereo, which is big $ for most. It turned out to be a bad coil ($20), an improper bolt in clutch ($2), and a couple bad bose speakers ($60-ebay), wound up being an awesome deal. The second car a 2000 pewter frc (60K odo), has some scratches, non working a/c, small crack in tail and "busted up" backup light/license plate assembly, bent tail pipe, an a popping suspension. The car didn't look so great, so the price was dropped substantially. I buffed the scratches ($0), replaced backup light assembly ($30), replaced tail pipes w/b&b bullets ($615), can't even see small crack in tail now, recharged ac and it worked for awhile and replaced the plastic endlinks for the metal ones ($60). The car looks great now and is seems to be a well cared for car mechanically.

So, usually I don't use the ac anyway becuase hey it robs horsepower, but I live in texas and it is beyond hot right now , So I turn it on and...... hot air. I am a mechanically inclined person, however I know nothing about ac's. Right now the compressor kicks on and off, so I think it might have enough 134 in it to work. The ac controller (digital) doesn't seem to properly change temperatures and right now I am thinking maybe that could be the problem. I had a similar problem in my 04 silverado and replaced the controller and that fixed the problem. I got the controller for the truck for free. The one for the vette is gonna cost some money.

So long story short, is there any other way I can test the controller or bypass it before spending the money? I really like to work on things myself so I can save money and spend it where it counts, like on the engine.

Thanks for reading and I appreciate any replies.

Can be one of three things or actually all: You can pull the codes of the DIC anmd let us know what is there if any.

1. The Climate Controller is bad - I just replaced mine that was doing the same thing, it stopped changing the temps or adjusting. replaced with a used one and it worked perfect!

2. The Vacuum line is pinched or eaten through. I did a write-up on this here:
http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c5-t...with-pics.html

3.AC Actuators not allowing the vents to move, here is a fixit:

Thanks,Matt

Thanks for the info. I checked the DIC codes and none for the AC. I didn't get a chance to work on it this weekend, but the next thing I do will definately be to check the vacuum lines (funny thing, I just started hearing a possible leak under the hood saturday).

Thanks for the quick reply.

if you are sure it is the actuator you can buy a control unit from an 01 and up for about $125 and swap it out..the newer units have a logic circuit built in that over rides the bad actuator....thats how I fixed mine...easier than pulling half the dash to get that damn little box out

Ok, so if figured out the problem. I was messing around with it and checked everything. I noticed when I took of the port caps one of them went pssst. Got some guages and it was low on 134 again. So I charged it and ice cold ac. When I removed the guage hose I noticed it bubbling. It has a leaky shcrader valve on the low side port. Where can I get one? Anyone have this problem before?

One of mine was bubbling so I replaced both. Like a tire valve but think they have refrigerant resistant rubber or neoprane seals. Pulled mine with a tool that resembles a tire valve remover also at AC supply house and no more leaks.
