Default Drivetrain whine. Please advise.

Hey guys. I'm getting a loud whine from my drivetrain and wanted to see what everyone thought it might be. It whines when i'm accelerating/when there is load on the drivetrain. It's a high pitched whine, not a grinding. I get it in all gears and the faster you go the louder the whine.

I changed tranny fluid and it looked good. I changed diff fluid and it was burnt. There were also some metal shavings on the magnetic drain plug.

I'm under the impression that it's the diff but the only thing that has me second guessing myself is that I also hear a little whine when I change gears and I feel it in the shifter.

Your help and advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

A few too many hard launches???

Mine did that... right after a night at the strip. Sounds like a new rear end is in your future.

That is the rear. Gone through a couple in the last year. The whining is probably the ring in pinion. I'd get a built RPM one, unless you have the ability to rebuild it.

Thanks for the replies guys. Any idea why I would feel/hear it when I shift into a gear?

The way I understand it....when the ring and pinion go, it also affects the bearings on the torque tube (driveshaft) which results in whining in the rear end and feeling it thrugh the shifter and hearing noise under the console. This just happened to me this past month.
Resulted in the replacement of the rear transmission carriage on my 18,000mi
2003 with new one. Dealer charged me close to $2800.00. Dealer rebuild about same cost. Figured I'd go w/brand new.

Why wouldn't you go with built one from RPM for 1800-2000 instead of going back to a stock unit?

Go with 3.90's and don't look back. Perfect gear for a daily driver/weekend warrior/ long road trips. I wish I had gone with 4.10's, but I like a lot of gear.

BTW, call England Green in Houston for an RPM special with install.

Yup, I was planning on going 3.90's.

The shop that does all my work (Quality Motorsports) is hooking me up already, thanks for the heads up though!

Small town, no speed shop. Also rather keep the car stock.

Holy expensive repair Batman!! I just bought a used 3.42 diff on here for $600. This just proves one of the side benefits of someone that enjoys/has the capability to work on their car - not dealing with expensive stealership labor rates.

Iv'e been getting a tad bit of drivetrain whine since april, Ive had it on the lift at my family's dealership and noticed a little leaking from the rear diff, after looking at it with a couple of mechanics at the shop we concluded that the leaking was so minor that it wasn't worth the effort to replace it. So I just keep an eye on it, the whine isn't that loud and the car still shifts and drives fine. But I'm a little different I have access to a shop and mechanics to fix it if it gets worse.

Wish I had the time to learn, but have to work long hours to afford this toy.

Yeah in your case better to have someone do it right. Than you do it wrong and be back in the same position!

Yup. Really glad I had it done. Car is back to being its old badass self. Took it ripping down some backroads yesterday. Great stress release therapy. Fell in love all over again. Worth every penny.

I burned out my diff with 6 years doing track days. Had the whine under acceleration and nothing on coasting. Gears were just worn out. Replaced it with the RPM 3.90 and extremely happy with the results. Very little difference in gas mileage and big performance change

Good choice

Just an update in case anyone ever has the same issue... It was in fact the diff. My RPM diff is in my car and broken in. I love the 3.90's!
