I am buying a Z06 and test drove two cars yesterday. One was much noisier than the other, engine noise, although both had stock exhausts and the only difference was the quieter one had a K&N intake. The noisy one had a real burbling V8 sound at idle and acceleration the other was fairly quiet. Both were the same at highway speeds. The only difference was the quieter one had a foam partition at the back. Can that make a big difference or do you have ANY ideas as I'd like to buy one of them today. Any help appreciated.
Intake won't make a difference. Sounds like headers or possibly a cam in the one. He can insist it's stock all day long, but unless he's owned it from day one, he doesn't really know.
I would suggest looking at the exhaust tips, sounds like the louder car is not stock. The burbling gets more noticable with aftermarket exhaust. Here's a pic of the stock exhaust on a Z06.
Sorry...missed the part about the partition. Yes, big difference when I have mine up vs down.
Check the exhaust. Mufflers should look identical to the above pic. Also, check the manifolds and mid-pipe. You are looking for short exhaust manifolds with an H-pipe in the mid-pipe. All stock C5 exhaust diameters are 2.5in.
However, you don't really have to worry about a car that has headers. If your knowledge-able, get underneath and check out the work to make sure no wires are touching the headers. It will be a PITA to replace burnt wires later on.
I agree with Silverbird's post concerning the partition. I bought one from Southern Car Parts, and it was a great decision. The tires were considerable louder on concrete highways, and the partition made a noticable difference. Well worth the money, in my opinion.
