How many of the 2001 Z06's have the oil comsumption problems?
If you were in the market for a Used Z, How could you tell the difference between motors with Oil comsumption problems and the ones without? (supposedly GM addressed and fixed the problem in later 2001 Z06's)
The number I've heard is around 5% .. but who really knows? As far as I know, GM made no changes to production during the '01 model year to correct the oil consumption problem .. the new rings started going into the '02s. As far as determining whether a particular '01 has the problem .. I don't know. Burning a lot of oil could leave a lot of sooty residue in the tailpipes. Could also leave the plugs a little dirty-looking.
The first thing I would do is pull up the service records for the particular car at a Chevy dealership. There's no way to tell from looking if it has the problem.
I have one of the last 2001 Z06's made - June 2001. It's a consumer. Check out the exhaust tips for excessive carbon. I'd also check the service records. 5% seems to be the best guess. If you get one, it would be covered under warranty. I haven't had mine fixed, because I'd rather spend $5 a month for oil than have a dealer monkey taking my engine apart.
My experience with oil consumption and motors tells me that it only gets worse with wear. More miles lead to adding more oil. This problem will continue to be bothersome.......
Oil Rings are the biggie in the equation.....
They maintain oil pressure. If they are $rap, they will let the engine blow by too much oil leading to dirty tail pipes....
There might be a perception of definition. How that equates to the real number of cars or % of cars that have the oil consumption problem I don't really know.
I have a 1 qt consumption rate for app ea 5000 miles. If I changed the oil at 3000, 4000, 5000 or even 6000. I may not have gone long enough to really know this. So I base my answer on having done 13-15k mile interval changes and the oil I have had to add.
Yeah the nearest I can figure is 6% of the Z06's that have the oil consumption problem.
As an apples to oranges comparison, all of my TLC's (3) are on 15k interval Mobil One oil changes. At the 14k mark, each of them use between 1/4-1/2 qt of oil.

In this case, the "theory" is that it's a ring-seating problem, not a wear problem like you're describing. But there are all kinds of theories, so I'm not saying you're wrong - just that some have reported that the problem has improved over time, as miles accumulate. Another supposed "fix" reported by some has been to run non-synthetic oil for a time to assist with ring seating.
Our '01 was built within a day or two of final 2001 production - vin #355xx, if I recall (She's out driving it right now or I'd go look :D ) It's a moderate user at about 1qt/1500mi, so that kinda shoots the theory that production break-in of the fix occured prior to model-year change over.
Like others, I'd rather spend the $5 a month on oil than have the motor torn apart... It's a small price to pay to have a car like this, imho.
Mobil 1 by the case would be worth it to have a Z06 in the driveway...
Biggest concern is getting a car that spends more time in the shop than on the road.
Oil comsumption of 1 qt in 3000 to 5000 miles is not bad. Beyond that and this car owner would begin to sweat bullets. I have a chronic lead foot.
  That much oil comsumption would make me baby the thing....
Jim, I've also read that this oil consumption thing has to do with driving style. That theory is that you consume more oil if you regularly maintain high rpms without being under a load.
My '01 vert uses oil between 3,000 mile changes. I sometimes need a quart after 1,500 miles. At other times, I'm just coming up on a quart low when I change the oil.
If driving style contributes to oil useage...
Wifey and I will have a contest.
The first one to use up a case of oil has to buy the other one dinner...heheheh :smash: :smash: :smash:
I run my car at or near redline 50% ofthe time. My new car breakin proceedure was to pull out of the dealer, shift into second just a tad under 6000 rpm and try to make the tires last at least till the end of the day. I use no oil between changes which i do every 3000 miles. I now have 11000 miles on the car. It doesnt get any better than a z06.
My 01 was built early in July of 2000. I traded it with 7000 miles - it did not have a consumption problem. If you decide to buy the car I recommend that you clearly establish with the dealer your oil consumption expectations. Once you buy the car you don't want them telling you that a quart every 500 miles is normal.
