Noise from rear
I have found things on a whine from the rear being the rear diff. I wouldn't call this a whine but maybe it is.
Nothing has changed on the car and it is driven pretty mildly, no hard accelerations, etc. So it shouldn't be anything that got damaged in the last week or 2. My rear tires are getting to the point that I need to start thinking about replacements but aren't bald by any means.
My first thoughts were that it is coming from one or both tires but the way my luck has been lately I'm beginning to worry that it might be something more and worse.
Anything I should specifically look at as being a known problem with these?
The cars a 2000 FRC all stock with 72,000 miles.
My original F1 Supercar tires made a loud roaring sound on the highway (as you describe) after about 5-6K miles. When I replaced them with Vredesteins, the car seemed to be quieter than when new. I think a wheel bearing sounds more like a low pitch grinding-like sound that gets louder with speed.
The noise I am hearing doesn't change with acceleration. The faster I go the louder it gets but it isn't all that loud. Can just hear it over the muffler because it is something different than what I am used to. I can let off the accelerator and even turn off the ignition and hear it lower as my speed decreases. It seems to disappear above 75 mph.
I've had it maybe 2 1/2 years and have never heard the tires doing this so I was leaning towards bearings initially.
Just priced bearings at auto parts store. $199-239 depending on brand. I guess the good news is that I can install the assembly myself and save the labor portion. Now I just need to figure out if this is what it is. Guess it'll be going up on some jack stands this weekend. I'll be able to pinpoint where the noise is coming from that way atleast.
