Just wanted to share another idea for a GPS system for those of you that have a Iphone. Purchased the Magellan Premium Car Kit then down loaded the latest Map software, I actually like the Tom-Tom software better, no problem using it with the Magellan Car kit.
This kit has voice enhancement, you can still access any of your Iphone application and it will charge the Phone when plugged in. Best part is when you leave your vehicle you take the phone with you without disconnecting the hardware. I hard wired it directly to the fuse box so it only comes on when the ignition is on. The Magellan stand fits perfectly in the cup holder, I have the Iphone 4 and this unit will work with all the Iphone 2, 3g, 3gs and 4g.
I like the MotionX Drive GPS and it's only 99¢. After 60 days of free voice navigation you can buy it in 30 day or 1 year subscriptions something like 2.99 per month. http://drive.motionx.com/video/
I used it on my iPhone 3G and now my new iPhone 4. Works great, they do suck up some battery so I have to keep it plugged in.
I looked at the window mount Tom-Tom but to me it was too hardware in the windshield, I've been just laying the new phone in the horizontal position against the ashtray door and it seems to stay put with Apple's iPhone 4 Bumper installed.
That mount system you have looks interesting, need to check it out. ($129.)
I tried one of those Belkin hands free mounts that plugs into the lighter socket but they don't stay put. Took it back and got my money back.
ive been thinking about this. can't decide between this option and a new garmin or TomTom with free maps and traffic. is the screen big enough? can you play music and make calls at the same time?

Yes you can play music and make or receive call via blue-tooth within the system.
I believe that the Magellan site is incorrect saying that the iphone has a built in GPS receiver. I have a 3g and was camping last W/E and when I had no cell service I had NO GPS. This tells me that the iphone uses tower triangulation for coordinates. This has happened on several occasions. I think the software would be great as long as you had a good cell signal.

The hardware ( Magellan Car Kit ) has the GPS receiver built in, and the maps are download as software and will work even if you don't have Cell Signal.

Good point, No signal no GPS.... and with the iPhone my brother has gets lot of dropped calls.
This is from Bob Borchers, senior director of worldwide iPhone product marketing at Apple:
"There is not much you can do with the GPS According to Apple, the iPhone’s GPS antenna is much too small to emulate turn-by-turn navigation of a GPS unit. Instead, all it can do at this point is track your position as you drive along, representing you as a blue dot sliding along the roads of the map. Even then, the metal of a car or the buildings are often enough to block the iPhone’s view of the sky, leaving it just as confused as you are."
The Iphone 4g with the Magellan car kit works perfectly, has never lost track of the vehicle turn by turn voice direction and so on. You want to get the Droid, I could care less. My motive for this post was another idea for those of us who enjoy our Iphone and now it's a useful GPS system.

the iPhone does have a GPS receiver. The iPhone downloads the maps as it needs them. When in an area without a signal it cannot download the map but the blue dot for your location keeps moving across the map. Once you are within a network area (3G or Edge) you then get the map downloads. In those nonreception areas it is still showing your location, it just does not have a map to superimpose on the location. It knows where it is even though we may not.
That is one feature that you dont have with regular GPS in that you always have the latest map. With the others you keep having to update the maps.
SO are you all saying that with a 3g that it is to slow to work as a good nav unit? Or does purchasing the Magellan kit mentioned in the first post take care of the slowness?

Chill Sponge! I was making a point to someone else's post (oldvettedrvr)! As it's a proven fact that the 3G iPhone does not have a great GPS antenna and/or system. My post had nothing to do with the NEW 4G iPhone and it's GPS system.
