Damn It's HOT
Heat wave in the D.C. area. HVAC reading between 97 and 105 all the way home. Coolant temperature reads between 235 and 239 with AC on. Coolant temperature goes down around 230 and 235 with AC off. Stop and go beltway traffic all the way. Coolant about three years old. 160 thermostat.
Does the above sound right based on the conditions or am I overheating?

Sounds about right for the conditions. Especially when in stop and go or slow traffic. I was out today in temp of 92* mostly slow driving with a/c on and my car temp was 210 - 215*. These cars do run hot when it is HOT. Does not seem to be a problem. I have a 2008 Silverado and it stays on 210* when up to op temp.

Melting Slicks
113 in Tucson right now and has been 105-110 all week and with the AC on my 2001's coolant temp runs between 197 moving & 207 in heavy traffic.
Sounds like you are running to hot to me!

While the stop and go traffic and the high outside temps really do put a strain on the cooling system, I'd have to say those temps are a bit high.
You might want to check and make sure the radiator area is clear of any debris and that your fans are kicking on properly.

Safety Car
Dont know if its normal but I did have very similar results last year or the year before (95+ and coolant 225 - 230 ish in stop and go traffic) but had it out the other day in the current heat wave and it was hotter (100 ish) and even with the air on I stayed below 220 ?
Had the coolant checked a few months ago when the tranny and rear end fluids were changed, it was good so its the same coolant that was in there back when it was running hotter.
Only difference I can think of is in between the last heat wave and this one I did have the car tuned (ECS) but kept the stock Tstat. Hard to believe the change in fan setting could make that much of a difference

about a month ago, while driving in 110+ weather, i was coming to work @ 5PM in some f'd up traffic. my temps were rising and actually pegged my temp gauge @ 265° and my check gauges light came on.
fortunately traffic picked up at that point and the vehicle's motion cooled the car down to normal levels.
i promptly replaced my 10+ year old stock thermostat with a 160 from autozone. my temps now barely kiss 200 in the hot afternoon stop-and-go commute where they would always be 220-230 on the same drive. i'll change back to a new stock thermostat when the weather cools.
maybe your 160° thermostat is needing to be replaced?

Are your fans set to come on earlier than stock?
This would definetely help keeping it cooler, it was a 104* the other day and I had the AC and it hit 209* and 221* at the Stop lights then back down to 197* which isn't bad in this heat -
The other night I drove home from work and ambient was 80* coolant was at 183* right after the therm stat opens
Make sure there is "NO" Blockage in front of the AC condensor, like a plastic trash bag that got sucked up there and stuck or just leaves
Thanks,Matt
