Default A4 owners question

How much does your A4 "creep" in gear at idle???
I have a '98 that idles around 750 and I have to keep a good amount of brake pressure to keep it from moving even on a slight incline. If I let it go it will get up to about 25MPH. Is this about normal??

Sounds 'bout right for mine also. I haven't checked the speedo, but I will on my way home today.
[EDIT] Mine's an '03, btw.

If you take your foot off the brake you can go 25mph?? That sounds really high. I will check when I get her out today.

Don't have an automatic, but 25 mph does not sound right to me.

25 MPH uphill? Sounds a little much. I don't think mine would do that.

Default Sounds a little fast!

I just took mine out on our street which is flat and level and when I let off the gas in drive it went up to about 6-7 mph and continued at that speed and reverse is about the same. My car has the performance axle ratio, which I don't know if that makes any difference.

Good luck with that!

Mine gets up to 13-15mph if I just let off the brakes. When i'm going down the road on a city street, pretty level, if I let go off the gas at about 27mph, it will do about 25 while idling in another gear othen than 1st. It's 2nd or 3rd, idk?

Is it 750 in Drive or Neutral?

750 RPM in Drive would be a little high if your engine is stock.

My idle in drive is ~600 if I take my foot of the brake while in drive on level ground it will creep a little, never really tested to see how fast it will go. On a steep hill I have no forward motion on a slight incline it will creep a little. I have 3:15's in the rear.

I have the 2.73 rear.
750 RPM in neutral & its stock
Actual MPH at idle on level ground is somewhere between 20 & 25, 25 may be a little high (was just a guess)

No it's not normal if your engine is stock it should idle ~550 W/AC on and in gear.

Mine changes all the time. On slight inclines it will still creep usually but never 25mph, not even when level. Maybe 5-10mph when level and 2-4mph when on a very slight incline. I almost find it more amazing that on a large incline it will sometimes stay still and not roll backwards.

I noticed that as well. Maybe some kind of hill start assist or something?

For the record OP, I have the 2.73 axle and in drive it creeped about 6-7mph.

Sounds like you need to have a mechanic look at it. Not normal.

at 100% stock, my A4 would idle at 600/650 rpm - in gear & stopped

Got a chance to check mine yesterday on the way home from work. It idles at ~600 RPM in gear and creeps along at ~5 mph on a level surface. It's an A4, all stock.

25 mph seems awful high to me. I know mine doesn't get that fast when at idle and no brakes being applied. I'd say mine gets about 8 mph or so.
