i got the clb for my '02 and carry it in the hatch compartment in the back just in case. are you [collectively] installing these on cars with a problem or installing them as a preventative measure?
Carrying the device around with you for when you have the problem occur is not the best solution by any stretch of the imagination. Once you have the symptoms you may not be able to install it and have it correct the problem. If the column locks and you can not first get the column unlocked, the CLB is useless. It does NOT unlock the column. Additionally the steps to installing the CLB may well be more than plugging it in. If you have the spliced purple wire mod and relay in the passenger footwel you need to bypass the relay in order fot the CLB to work once it is installed.
Good luck if the Column Lock symptoms strike you and you are not in your driveway.......
i'm not following you here. why are you saying it does not unlock the column? is it not the cig lighter plug that unlocks it and the bypass to fool the computer into thinking it's working fine so it will run?

Yes it does unlock it if everything is working the way it should, but do you also carry the necessary tools (T-15, Screwdriver, Wire Cutters, etc) to install it once it happens.
Also, what happens if your actuator break/locks in place. The cig plug will not work, hence why the CLB is a preventative maint. tool.

i basically made a little kit with the tools i would need, but i was counting on if it ever failed to unlock it was no big deal. i was prepared. i guess if everything is normal and my column lock simply failed to unlock i'd be ok. now i'm not so sure.
i guess there's no harm done just doing it now that way there's no room for unforseen problems in some ungodly place.
I had my headlight motor gear break last week and finished replacing it then I got the dreaded Column Lock today for the first time. 8 years never a problem headlight and column lock in the same week. I ordered the CLB from Corvettes of Houston today. I have a 02 Z06 and never got the recall done. I hope the CLB works once I get the pin to retract. Not sure what caused the column to lock now. Since the column locked in my garage I will consider myself lucky

Hook up a battery charger overnight, your problem may disappear. then again it may not, but it's worth a try.
I jump started the car and installed the CLB. I did have to remove the lower column bezel and smack the column lock with a rubber mallet a few times before the column motor would work. I did have to pull fuse 25 to clear the DIC column lock error message.
Well, I packed everything up back in the bag nice and tidy. I'm going to give the vendor a call tomorrow morning. I'm hoping they can help me. The vendor is Corvettes of Houston, and I hope they can resolve the issue. I'm glad to see I'm not the only person who has had this problem with the CLB.
One thing that does disturb me is that all the people who have had the same issues as me removed the CLB and have been fine. Why would a preventative item cause a problem? Why don't the other member who have had issues only with a CLB installed not gone to another vendor/get another item and have it installed?
I'm starting to wonder if its worth my time to try again, or if I should just chalk it up as a complete loss.
How did you make out with the CLB?
I'm about to install mine and I was curious if you ever cured your problems.
I had one put in about a year ago and sometimes the car wont start. Turn the key and nothing happens..just dead. Wait a about 30mins and it starts right up like nothing was wrong. Drives me nuts. Only happens about twice a year but i scares the crap out of me.
Am I missing something?? Pretty pissed at this point...
No, you did it right. Unfortunately, this can happen if
1. You had GM recall #2 or higher done at which point you still have to watch out for the fuel cutoff issue
2. Your PCM falls within the certain model year cars that do this when CLBs are installed. Your CL will never lock but its annoying clearing the DIC each time you start it.
