I'm looking to smoke out my tail lights, reverse lights, and rear side lights. Do you guys recommend getting them actually painted by someone, or buying the black out kits that I've seen on here? or. is there something else someone might recommend?

I have the kit. I need to be able to remove mine. I have seen some great tinted ones, but they are pricey.
I had that kit on my Z for about one summer. That look was great, and gave a nice ghostly look.
It depends on whether you think you'd get tired of the look, or you would need to remove them for inspection. The inserts simply insert into the housings, but the 3rd brake light and reverse light ones were 3m'ed onto the lights. After a while, I got tired of it, but left the front corner ones.
If you ever track the car with the painted ones, you might get booted off the track because other drivers, and the track workers will complaign that they are a safety hazard. I had this happen to a friend, and I loaned him two of mine for the day.
Those are the same ones I have on my Z. The points made in the other posts are valid and remember that when you put them on your car. I do like mine alot.
It really depends on the officer. The only time I had issues was on my black coupe and the officer had a rookie and was hasseling me about them. I understood where he was coming from and was cool with it. No biggie, I took them off and put back on later.
Knock on wood no trouble here. I did not like how the 3rd brake light cover stayed on so I bought a tinted 3rd and also bought the tinted rear side markers. Running that kit everywhere else. IMO it still doesn't look as good as the tinted lights but I went this route in case I got static and had to take them off the car.

Or what ive done, is i purchased some cling tint like 20% you can get as dark as 5% at walmart. I made templates for the lights, and just cut with a razor and fit and cut and fit and cut until it fit perfectly. Took a few hours but the end result looks very similar to pulling the lights out and having them spray tinted. It looks very clean and you still see the definition in the light instead of a huge piece of flat plastic covering the slot.

Sounds interesting. I may give this a try if I have some free time this weekend. It cant be too hard to do. It seems like it might be a little time consuming, but if you are precise about it you can really get them looking good.
VHT makes a spray paint/tint. Works great. I just finished a project blacking out the side markers. Ill post some pics in the next two days. Just be sure to use a LOT of painters tape. Im thinking about doing the front corners next week.
